The Matildas are raring to go following their AFC Women's Asian Cup disappointment when they face New Zealand in a friendly on Friday night

Tony Gustavsson's side suffered a surprise exit in the quarter-finals after a 1-0 loss to South Korea in January.

It was a sobering result for the Matildas with the 2023 Women's World Cup on home soil fast approaching.

Coach Gustavsson conceded their exit has left 'wounds' on the team but believes they are primed to bounce back quickly.

"This morning was the first time in over two months that I met the team after the quarter-final loss against Korea at the Asian Cup and you could sense out on the field that, even though there might have been some jetlag, the vibe and energy was amazing," Gustavsson said in a pre-match press conference.

"For me, it's a litte bit of a healing process because there are some wounds from losing a quarter-final.

"After training today...I'm feeling in a really good place. With the fans in the stands and the energy we're going to create together, we're in a good place tomorrow."

The Matildas haven't had an ideal build-up to the match with most players only arriving in camp midweek.

Among them was skipper Sam Kerr, and while Gustavsson hinted some of his late arrivals won't play, the Chelsea star seems a certainty to get some minutes.

"That's one of the names we have to discuss tonight. I know Sam and Sam's choice is she's always playing, she wants to give back to the fans and be with them," he said.

"If she gets to pick, she's playing, but I also need the experts to look out for her health.

"In the Olympics there were times when she physically shouldn't have been able to play but she pushed through.

"She wants to win, she wants to be there for this team.

"She's probably going to be on the park, the question is how many minutes?"

On Thursday, it was revealed that Disney have been working with the Matildas on a six-part documentary series to be released in 2023.

While added cameras could've been a distraction, Gustavsson stressed it has only helped the side's focus ahead of a big 12 months.

"It could've been a disturbance if handled wrong but it's been handled perfectly by everyone," he said.

"I think it could actually be an advantage when handled correctly. I think this documentary can also make sure this team gets all the attention and connection it deserves."
