After more than four years of waiting, another FIFA World Cup is here with the 2022 tournament taking place in Qatar. 

Not only is this edition being held at a different time of the year, but this is the first time the World Cup has been played in the Middle East. 

Australia qualified for a fifth straight World Cup and found themselves in a group alongside France, Denmark and Tunisia. 

The green-and-gold did the nation proud, bowing out at the round-of-16 stage to Argentina, who will meet France in the tournament finakl.

What TV channel is World Cup 2022 on in Australia?

The 2022 FIFA World Cup will be televised on SBS and SBS VICELAND in Australia. 

SBS is available on free-to-air TV in Australia and the network secured the rights for the tournament all the way back in 2011.

According to the Financial Review, SBS spent around $20 million to on the World Cup broadcast rights. 

Optus Sport were the official broadcaster back in 2018 but ended up sharing coverage with SBS due to technical problems. 

FIFA will undertake a tender process for the 2026 World Cup broadcast rights in the second-half of 2023. 

How to watch SBS in Australia 

SBS can be watched on terrestrial television with the channel provided freely to all Australian households. 

The channel can also be streamed for free via SBS On Demand which simulcasts everything shown.

SBS TV guide World Cup 2022 in Australia

Every match from the 2022 World Cup will be televised on SBS. 

Eight games were notably broadcast on SBS VICELAND, which is one of the network's secondary channels, when two fixtures were played at the same time.

SBS' coverage of individual matches will begin 30 minutes prior to kickoff.
