Arsenal's 2023/24 campaign got off to a flying start with a penalty shootout Community Shield victory over Manchester City.

Considering they were without a win against Pep Guardiola's men in their previous eight meetings across all competitions, it was a huge step forward for the Gunners' bid to go one step further than last season and win the Premier League.

Mikel Arteta's side led City for 248 days in the 2022/23 campaign and only began to slip up after an unfortunate injury to William Saliba.

With Erling Haaland firing 52 goals in his debut season and not expected to slow down any time soon, it will have to be a monumental effort for Arsenal to pip the treble winners to the title this season. But are they the best-placed side to do it?

Arsenal strengthen, but in the right areas?

Arteta has been treated to three mega signings so far this summer. Declan Rice (£105 million), Kai Havertz (£65 million) and Jurrien Timber (£38 million) have all been brought in and while they are prominent signings, they still lack a 20-goal-a-season striker.

Gabriel Jesus was signed for £45 million last summer and took Arsenal's attack to a new level, however, he suffered a knee injury at the World Cup, which sidelined him for four months. He has recently re-injured that knee and could be out for another few weeks.

Only City scored six more goals than the Gunners in the league last season. Gabriel Martinelli, Martin Odegaard and Bukayo Saka contributed 67 league goals between them; so adding an elite striker's goal tally to that and Arsenal could easily be up there as the highest-scoring Premier League side.

Timber will no doubt add depth to that defensive backline but will he be pushing Ben White out of the starting XI? That's to be determined.

Havertz only managed nine goals in 47 appearances at Chelsea last season and when Jesus is fit, where does the German fit in the lineup?

The main reason for the depth signings will be due to the club competing in the Champions League for the first time since the 2016/17 season, but it's hard to see whether the quality of starters has improved enough to take them to the title.

Because of all those question marks, Arteta's Gunners are quite rightly second-favourites to City once again.

When did Arsenal last win the title?

Arsenal's last title was undoubtedly their most famous, the famous Invincibles season. Arsene Wenger steered the Gunners to a feat no other team has managed in the Premier League era.

Thierry Henry was pivotal to the success as he had 36 goal contributions (30 goals, 6 assists) across his 37 games played.

The only other side to go through a league campaign without being defeated was Preston North End in the inaugural Football League competition back in 1888/89.
