Argentina understandably thought they had seen the last of Canada when they overcame a spirited performance from Jesse Marsch's side with a 2-0 win in the opening game of the Copa America.

But the CanMNT has not lost a game since, shocking Peru with a 1-0 win and securing progress from Group A with a goalless draw against Chile.

Marsch's men then overcame Venezuela on penalties and face La Albiceleste once again after Lionel Scaloni's team were similarly taken the distance by Ecuador.

As each team seeks to book a return to MetLife Stadium for Sunday's final, one man could hold their fate in his hands

Here are all the details on referee Piero Mazo's record ahead of a Copa America semifinal clash of contrasts.

Who is referee for Argentina vs. Canada?

Piero Maza leads an all-Chilean team of seven match officials.

Claudio Urrutia and Jose Retamal are his assistants on the night. Juan Lara is on Video Assistant Referee (VAR) duty, assisted by Edson Cisternas.

Cristian Garay is the fourth official, with Juan Serrano taking fifth-official duties.

Maza was appointed to the Chilean Primera Division for the 2014/15 season and was added to FIFA's International Referees List in 2018.

That same year, he refereed his first Copa Libertadores match and has overseen 25 matches in South America's premier club competition, including the 2022 semifinal second leg between eventual winners Flamengo and Velez Sarsfield.

The 2024 Copa America is Maza's first major senior international competition.

Piero Maza's record refereeing Argentina and Canada

Argentina probably won't be too disappointed to see Maza, given his maiden international game was when they beat Italy 3-0 at Wembley in 2022 to win the Finalissima.

In his second CONMEBOL World Cup qualifier, Maza took charge of Argentina's historic 1-0 win over Brazil at the Maracana last November, where he sent off Selecao midfielder Joelinton.

Prior to Argentina vs. Canada, Maza has taken charge of two games at the Copa America, both in the group stages.

Most recently he presided over Brazil's 4-1 win against Paraguay, where a brawl between both teams erupted in first-half stoppage time when Fabian Balbuena shoved Vinicius Junior to the floor. Paraguay midfielder Andres Cubas was later sent off for violent conduct.
