One of football's best ever players is now a free agent after Lionel Messi's Barcelona contract expired at the end of June.
The 34-year-old remains at the top of his game and recently won the Copa America in Brazil with Argentina.
While Messi was expected to re-sign at Camp Nou for next season, the club revealed on August 5 that they have been unable to strike a new deal due to financial restraints.
That leaves Messi free to join the club of his choosing with every side around the world dreaming of landing the Argentine star.
Here's where we think Lionel Messi could be playing next season.
1. Paris Saint-Germain
PSG are a leading candidate by simply having the financial might to offer Messi a lucrative contract and have reportedly already held talks with the attacker.
They fell short in their Champions League quest again this past season and will be desperate to strengthen wherever they can.
Neymar, who formed a lethal partnership with Messi at Barcelona, will be remaining in Paris and he could prove key in convincing his former teammate to move to France for a season or two.
PSG have been coy over whether they are planning to target Messi this summer but president Nasser Al-Khelaifi did previously stress he's a player that clubs are free to approach.
2. Manchester City
Having once again fallen short in their quest to win the Champions League this year, don't be surprised to see Manchester City come calling again for Messi.
While manager Pep Guardiola has previously declared his desire to see Messi stay at Barcelona, he'd be crazy not to sign the Argentine as a free agent if the opportunity did present itself.
City are one of few clubs that could afford Messi's wages and he could silence plenty of critics by starring in the Premier League before he retires.
A reunion with Guardiola would also surely be tempting for the No.10 and it might be just what City needs to finally win the Champions League.
The club's recent signing of Jack Grealish may complicate a possible move for Messi but if any team can find room for another star it's them.
3. Barcelona
While the Catalan club shocked the world by confirming Messi won't be re-signing, it could well be a stunt to force La Liga to loosen their financial restrictions.
Both Barca and Messi wanted to continue their partnership next season with only economical restraints seeing the deal collapse at the last minute.
The Argentine star looked destined to leave Camp Nou before the start of last season but ultimately ironed out the issues and there's a still chance the same could happen this time too.
4. Major League Soccer
Any move to America is unlikely to happen just yet, but a recent report out of Spain suggests Messi's next club deal could involve him joining MLS side Inter Miami in two years.
Such a contract agreement would be massive for MLS, who have developed a reputation of attracting world-class talent before they hang up the boots.
Inter Miami, co-owned by David Beckham, loom as a suitable destination for Messi should he move to the United States in the future with the club in a financially strong position and desperate to expand their brand in the coming years.
Messi also recently spent his time off in the US and clearly has some affection for the country.
5. Newell Old Boys
A sentimental option, Messi began his youth career with this Argentine club and it clearly still holds a fond place in his heart.
Like MLS, a move to Old Boys next season is very unlikely though with Messi still at the peak of his powers.
The club's current coach German Burgos admitted as much in March, while also claiming a future return could still be on the cards.
“I don't think he'll leave Barcelona because it's his home, like Newell's is too. I think, one day, he's going to pass through here," Burgos told La Capital.
“Because if Diego Maradona played here, Messi will also want to play in Newell’s. I think at some point that will pass. Hopefully it will be soon.”
