One South American club will reach new heights this weekend as Boca Juniors match up against Fluminense in the 2023 Copa Libertadores final from the Maracana in Rio de Janeiro.

Argentine side Boca Juniors, one of South America's most famous clubs, travel to enemy territory seeking their first continental title since 2007.

It's a chance for even more monumental glory for Brazilian club Fluminense, playing on home soil, as they have never won a Copa Libertadores crown. They have reached this stage once before, falling just short as Ecuadorian side LDU Quito lifted the trophy in 2008.

These two sides have reached this stage in vastly different manners. Fluminense have banged in goals throughout the tournament, with Argentine striker German Cano running away as the competition's top scorer.

Boca Juniors, meanwhile, have featured a lockdown defense, conceding just five goals in 12 matches while advancing through all three knockout stages via a penalty shootout.

Neither club, however, comes into the final in good form, as the aura of the event has caused their performances in other competitions to dip. Boca Juniors fell on the road at Racing Club in league play before a scoreless draw with Estudiantes sent them on their way. Meanwhile, Fluminense has been beaten at both Atletico Mineiro and Bahia leading into this match, with just one win in their last nine league games.

Boca Juniors vs Fluminense projected lineups & team news

Legendary Uruguayan striker Edinson Cavani should start up top for Boca Juniors, having joined over the summer from Spanish side Valencia. He will start alongside either Dario Benedetto or Miguel Merentiel, depending on the former's fitness after a muscle injury.

In goal is former Manchester United understudy Sergio Romero who spent a season with Italian club Venezia before heading back to his home country in the summer of 2022. 19-year-old wide player Valentin Barco is the team's best young star, recently linked to European clubs. Young midfielder Cristian Medina has played a big role in the middle, alongside other up-and-coming Argentine midfielders Ezequiel Fernandez and Alan Varela.

Boca Juniors will be without former Manchester United defender Marcos Rojo due to a muscle injury, while young winger Exequiel Zeballos has missed most of the season with a torn ACL.

Boca Juniors projected starting lineup (4-4-2): S. Romero (GK) — Fabra, Valdez, Figal, Advincula — Barco, P. Fernandez, E. Fernandez, Medina — Cavani, Merentiel.

Fluminense goalkeeper Fabio is still going strong at 43 years old, while another veteran German Cano is the Copa Libertadores leading goalscorer at 35 years of age. Other aging stars in big roles within this squad include 35-year-old former Real Madrid left-back Marcelo, 33-year-old right-back Samuel Xavier, 34-year-old playmaker Ganso, and 34-year-old winger Keno.

The lone youngster in a consistent starting role for Fluminense is 22-year-old midfielder Andre who has broken into the Brazil national team squad with his performances this season, making his international debut in June.

Injury absences for the Brazilian side include left-back Jorge who tore his ACL early in the season, and both starting center-backs in Felipe Melo and Nino, forcing backups Marlon and Manoel into the fray.

Fluminense projected starting lineup (4-2-3-1): Fabio (GK) — Guga, Marlon, Manoel, Marcelo — Andre, Alexsander — Arias, Ganso, Keno — G. Cano.

Boca Juniors vs Fluminense betting odds & lines

Neither side is in particularly good form heading into this match, but Fluminense are considered favorites thanks to their goalscoring record in the Copa Libertadores. The Brazilian club scored a whopping 12 goals through the six knockout round matches, and will be playing at "home" at the Maracana against a foreign opponent.

Boca Juniors, meanwhile, needed a penalty shootout to advance through each stage of the knockout round, drawing 2-2 with Nacional in the Round of 16, 0-0 with Racing Club in the quarterfinals, and 1-1 with defending champions Palmeiras in the semifinals.
