The 2024/25 Champions League league phase continues into the second round of fixtures with a host of heavyweight encounters between European's elite sides featuring on the midweek slate.

The competition, that brings together the best football clubs in Europe, has expanded from 32 to 36 teams this year. According to the new format, all the clubs will participate in the Champions League league phase (former group stage).

The top eight sides qualify automatically for the round of 16, while the teams finishing in ninth to 24th place will compete in a two-legged knock-out phase play-offs.

With the knockout phase playoffs now behind us, the competition has been reduced to 16 teams all vying for a spot in the quarterfinals. The previous stage delivered some surprises, as Italian giants AC Milan and Juventus were knocked out by Eredivisie rivals Feyenoord and PSV Eindhoven, respectively. In addition, Manchester City—once among the campaign's top favorites—were eliminated by Real Madrid.

Tuesday’s headline fixture will showcase a Madrid derby, with Real Madrid set to host Atletico Madrid. Meanwhile, Arsenal will be heading to PSV, Borussia Dortmund will play host to Lille, and Aston Villa will continue their impressive return to the Champions League with a visit to Club Brugge.

On Wednesday, attention will shift to the Parc des Princes where PSG will take on Liverpool in their Round of 16 first-leg encounter. Other significant clashes include Bayern Munich facing fellow Bundesliga outfit Bayer Leverkusen, Barcelona traveling to Benfica, and Inter taking on Feyenoord.

The Sporting News looks at the key fixture details this week and how to follow the matches.
