After a tight and ultimately scoreless first half in Newcastle, City found themselves in front just after the break with Zachary Bates fouled in the box before Denis Genreau tucked away the resulting penalty.

Down but not out, the Wanderers would respond just 15 minutes later through Lachlan Scott who found the bottom right corner after being picked out at the back post by substitute John Roberts.

With the momentum, Western Sydney were denied a second in the 78th minute with City keeper James Delianov doing well to deny Kostandinos Grozos and then Abraham Majok on the follow up.

In final minute of injury time, City would strike the post through Marko Delic with the game forced into extra time.

Wanderers goal scorer Scott would turn provider in the first period of extra time as he teed up Marc Tokich to fire Western Sydney ahead.

Roberts would then seal the win for the red and black with ten minutes remaining as he beat his man and fired low into the bottom left of goal.
