The semifinals of Euro 2024 have thrown up two eye-catching clashes with the first fixture pitting Spain against France.

Luis de la Fuente's side have been the most consistently impressive team in the tournament, finishing top of Group B, as the only side to win all three of their group matches.

That was followed up by a dominant 4-1 Round of 16 win over Georgia before knocking out hosts Germany via a 2-1 extra time victory in the quarterfinals.

France's path to the final four has been trickier for Didier Deschamps' team, as they qualified for the knockouts in second place in Group D, and needed an own goal to beat Belgium 1-0 in the Round of 16, and a penalty shootout to eliminate Portugal in the quarters.

A showdown in the semifinals is a first European Championship meeting since 2012 where Spain eventually went on to defend their European crown from 2008.

Spain hold the edge in historic head-to-head clashes with their northern neighbours but Les Bleus won the most recent meeting 2-1, as Kylian Mbappe's late goal secured the 2021 UEFA Nations League title for France.

The overall record stands at 16 wins for Spain, compared to 13 for France, with seven draws.

Competitive clashes between the two teams have been infrequent since 2000 with just six meetings in either qualification for, or during, a tournament.

Xabi Alonso's double secured a Euro 2012 quarterfinal win for Spain against France to avenge La Roja's 2006 World Cup and Euro 2000 exits at the hands of the French.

Spain vs. France past games at major tournaments

The first clash between France and Spain at a major tournament came in Euro '84 as the two teams met in the final in Paris.

The hosts had been powered to the final by their talismanic captain Michel Platini, who scored in every game in the run up to the final showdown.

Platini delivered again in the final, as France won a first ever European title, with a 2-0 victory at the Parc des Princes.

They did not meet again on a tournament stage until Euro '96 and a late Spain goal secured a 1-1 group stage draw. Both sides reached the quarterfinals, with Spain losing on penalties to hosts England, as France were knocked out by the Czech Republic in the semifinals.

The rivalry intensified in the following years, as France knocked Spain out in the quarterfinals of Euro 2000 and the Round of 16 at the 2006 World Cup, with the mercurial Zinedine Zidane scoring in both games.

France went on to win Euro 2000, via David Trezeguet's Golden Goal against Italy, but the Azzurri got their revenge in the 2006 World Cup final in a penalty shootout win following Zidane's infamous headbutt on Marco Materazzi.

However, Spain were to have their moment at Euro 2012, on the back of winning titles at Euro 2008 and the 2010 World Cup.

Vicente del Bosque's side confirmed their reputation as arguably the greatest-ever international team with a trophy lift in 2012 and Alonso's exploits in the last eight against France helped them on the way to glory.
