Socceroos vs. Indonesia: Prediction, odds, betting tips, lineups, team news for Australia's Asian Cup Round of 16 match image

The knockout rounds of the Asian Cup begin as former champions Australia take on first-time Round of 16 qualifiers Indonesia on Sunday.

The Socceroos flattered to deceive in the group stage, looking laboured in front of goal as they struggled to break down compact defences, yet they did enough to earn two wins and a draw that helped them top Group B ahead of Uzbekistan.

Indonesia, meanwhile, suffered two-goal losses to both Iraq and Japan, but their 1-0 win over Vietnam helped them qualify as one of the best third-placed teams, finishing a point ahead of Oman in those standings; it is a fantastic achievement for the country’s first appearance at the tournament since 2007.

Below, we look at all the latest betting odds, predictions, injury news and analysis for Australia vs. Indonesia in the Asian Cup 2023.

Australia vs. Indonesia team news and line-ups

Australia will still be without striker Mitch Duke, who is still recovering from a hamstring injury; Kusini Yengi was picked to start in his place in the final group match, and he helped win a controversial penalty in the first half.

To fix Australia’s attacking woes, Graham Arnold could move Jordan Bos back to his preferred position of left back and return Craig Goodwin to the starting side at left wing - the experienced winger hasn’t been sighted since being substituted against India.

Indonesia have opted for a cautious 5-4-1 setup during the group stage, something they will likely adopt again especially given Australia’s struggles in breaking down the low block.

Goalkeeper Ernando Sutaryadi was impressive in the win over Vietnam and the defeat to Japan despite conceding three goals, as has Marselino Ferdinan, who scored in the defeat to Iraq and has played on both the wing and in central midfield so far this tournament.

Australia vs. Indonesia match analysis, prediction and betting odds

The sides last met in 2010 during qualifiers for the Asian Cup; on that occasion a heavily rotated Socceroos side secured a narrow 1-0 win in Brisbane.

Indonesia have only defeated Australia once, way back in 1981, and their overall form has been poor; their win over Vietnam has been their only success in the last eight games.

Australia on the other hand went 561 minutes without conceding before Uzbekistan got a late equaliser in the last group stage match, and generally have a good record against sides ranked lower than them in the FIFA World Rankings.

Australia’s struggles have been clear to see, and with a few slices of luck going against them they could have been in a different position.

Anything can happen in knockout football, and Indonesia will have the belief they can cause a huge upset to begin the Round of 16.
