The Socceroos' successful return to action has seen them rise six places in the latest FIFA world rankings

After not playing for over 18 months, Australia had slipped to 41st in the world in May this year but four straight wins in June have seen them soar back up to 35th.

Those victories came in the second round of World Cup qualifying with Graham Arnold's side to kick off the third round against China on September 2.

The Socceroos rankings' rise comes less than seven years after the green and gold had sunk to a record low of 102nd in the world following heavy defeats at the 2014 World Cup.

Australia's highest placing came in September 2009 when they jumped up to 14th in the world, with their current ranking making them the third-highest placed Asian nation with Japan (24) and Iran (26) above them.

Arnold's side will face Japan in the next round of World Cup qualifying with their first clash to come on October 12 in Saitama.

The updated world rankings have also seen Belgium retain top spot with Brazil jumping up to second and Euro champions Italy rising to fifth.

Following their recent Gold Cup triumph, the United States (USMNT) have turned plenty of heads as they soared to 10th in the world.

Gregg Berhalter's side have won all but one of their 13 games played this year including matches against Mexico, who remain one spot ahead of them in ninth.

The USMNT's jump in rankings means they are now ahead of the likes of Germany, Netherlands and Uruguay.

While this is the first time they've cracked the top 10 in 15 years, their highest ever ranking came in 2006 when they were placed fourth in the world before an unsuccessful World Cup campaign.
