Socceroos contender Callum Elder has done his chances of a national call up no harm after scoring his first goal for League One leaders Hull City on Monday morning (AEST).

The 26-year-old left back scored the game's opening goal as the Tigers comfortably defeated Northampton Town 3-0 at the KC Stadium, to go three points clear at the top of England's third division.

After receiving the pass at the top of the penalty area, Elder ran on to the ball and struck it first time, curling a wonderful left-foot shot that came from outside the post before nestling in the net.

After 68 League One games for the Tigers, it was the first time defender Elder has found the back of the net.

Sydney-born Elder has become a fixture at Hull City since joining the club in 2019 - after originally being on Leicester City's books but failing to play a match, as he saw loan spells with the likes of Wigan Athletic and Ipswich Town.

Elder - who is eligible for Australia, England and Scotland at international level - is yet to make his debut for the Socceroos, but is believed to be in contention for selection for the green and gold's four World Cup qualifiers in June.

Speaking in an interview last week, Elder admitted his driving passion to play for the Socceroos and his hope to be involved in the next set of international matches.

"For sure, it’s a massive goal of mine,” Elder told the BBC via HullLive.

"I know there’s four qualifiers for the World Cup in June that will be played over the course of about 12 or 13 days which are being played in the UAE  and I definitely want to be a part of that squad and making my first appearances for my country.

"Right now, my main focus is on making sure I’m putting in the performances individually and helping the team so collectively we can get to where we want to be in May.

"It’s certainly an aspiration of mine to be representing my country.

"For all international managers, they want to see players they are selecting regularly playing so that’s been a big positive for me, that I’ve been able to cement my place in the team.

"Of course I know that I need to make sure my performances need to be right up there each week to keep my place in the team which is what I’ve been striving to do every game this season."
