Socceroo star Awer Mabil scored a late winner to secure a crucial victory for his Danish Superliga side FC Midtjylland.

The 25-year-old winger started on the substitutes bench but came on in the second half to strike the winner in the 93rd minute with a composed shot as the Wolves snatched a 2-1 win against Randers.

In the dying stages of the match, Mabil found space on the left side of the pitch and was played through on goal as Midtjylland counter-attacked.

The Adelaide United product took a touch, composed himself and drilled a low finish under the goalkeeper to grab all three points.

Midtjylland had earlier taken the lead in the 68th minute through Luca Pfeiffer before Randers equalised three minutes later courtesy of Alhaji Kamara.

Three points for the 2019-20 Superliga champions sees them go second on the league table - one point behind leaders Brondby.

Mabil was delighted to see his team show they can fight to the end of the match and get a result - a reminder of their title credentials after lifting last season's league trophy.

"It's nice to get the three points, that's the most important thing," Mabil said post-match.

"It's also nice to do it the way we did it.

"It's just a reminder that we still have that winning mentality that we had last season - and the way we won games last season.

Mabil has endured a frustrating campaign in the Superliga, with the goal against Randers his first in the league this season from 14 appearances.

The Australian did strike in the Champions League however, scoring the only goal in a 3-1 defeat to Ajax in November.

Mabil became one of the Socceroos' most important players during the 2019 Asian Cup, scoring twice in the group stage to help the green and gold through to the knockouts.

The Kenyan-born flyer has scored four goals in his 13 caps for his nation, and will figure as a key piece of the upcoming qualifying campaign for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

Mabil earned his move to FC Midtjylland in 2015 after starring in the A-League for Adelaide United for the two seasons prior.
