Fox Sports pundit Robbie Slater has opened up about an intense on-air clash he had with Socceroos legend Harry Kewell.

During the 2010 World Cup at South Africa, Slater claimed an Australian team-mate of Kewell's told him to 'f*** off' after they lost 4-0 against Germany in their group opener.

Kewell took exception to Slater's comments and fired back at him during an interview on Fox Sports that has gone down in Australian football folklore.

Their stoush would go on to make headlines with Slater revealing his friends and family were less than impressed with his decision to take on the Socceroos icon.

"I had a big dispute with Harry Kewell once - that was a cracker," Slater told Triple M's The Real Football Show

"Harry Kewell's a very good friend of mine now, but anyway it was after the World Cup in South Africa 2010 and I remember there was a live stoush on one of our shows on Fox Sports.

"Someone said to me, 'Why would you say something against Harry?' Which I didn't actually say something against Harry, it was something about Harry that happened at the World Cup...

"Anyway, someone said to me, 'It's like shooting Bambi! You're an idiot.'

"Well the show got great ratings because you know for whatever it was it was on the back page of The Daily Telegraph the next day and it had a big photo of me and a quote from Harry in massive letters, 'YOU'RE A LIAR'. This is one really to get framed and put up on the wall.

"The thing that stays with me and always makes me laugh is I came down the next morning after a pretty sleepless night to be honest and the front page was there and my daughter showed it to me.

"So I come down and my dad looks at me and said, 'A steel tongue keeps a wise head' and he walked off.

"Then my young son, who was about 12 at the time, he looked at me and said, 'Why would you do that dad?' and he just walked off because he had Harry Kewell posters on his wall.

"The killer blow was from my daughter, who was about 15 at the time, she looked at me and said, 'Harry's so much better looking than you dad' and she walked off."

Slater has been no stranger to memorable moments on Fox Sports since swapping his boots for a microphone.

His time on air however could soon be coming to an end after Network 10 and Paramount+ picked up all the Australian football rights Fox Sports had held for over a decade

While not ruling out a move to the new broadcaster, Slater was quick to stress how thankful he's been to have covered the game for so long.

"I've been at Fox Sports for 23 years and I've had a pretty good run. I think sometimes in our game people are always trying to take from the game," Slater said.

"The game owes me nothing. I owe the game everything. If it wasn't for the game, I wouldn't have made the living and had the career I had."
