PSG vs. Nantes result: Galtier wins Trophee des Champions on debut with Messi, Neymar on strike image

No Mbappe, no problem for defending Ligue 1 champions PSG as they rout reigning Coupe de France winners Nantes in the Trophee des Champions in Tel Aviv, Israel.

Mbappe was suspended for PSG’s season opener thanks to yellow card accumulation from the last campaign, but the Parisians looked energized under new manager Christophe Galtier on his competitive debut.

Neymar scored twice, both from dead-ball situations, while Lionel Messi and Sergio Ramos each got on the scoresheet as well. Nantes were ultimately toothless throughout, despite some early warning shots from talisman Ludovic Bias.

It’s a positive start to the Galtier era at PSG, who hope to combine a new manager with a clean bill of health to challenge on the European stage. Domestic success won’t be enough for Galtier to be deemed a success at the club, but it’s a great start for the new boss with the new season firmly in view.

The Sporting News followed the PSG vs. Nantes match live to provide score updates, commentary and highlights as they happened.

FULL-TIME: PSG 4-0 Nantes

The shot by Simon proved to be the final kick of the match as PSG win the Trophee des Champions! A convincing 90 minutes in Galtier's debut, with a pair by Neymar to lead the way. It's a promising start to the new manager's tenure, with nearly a full-strength side miles ahead of their opponents on the day.

90+3 min: A great save by Donnarumma right on the stroke of full-time keeps the clean sheet preserved, diving down to his left to stop a last-ditch effort by Moses Simon.

85th min: Chance, PSG! With the rout on, PSG are toying with Nantes now. The defending league champions break with ease, and Messi is slotted through all alone. He goes for the deft chip, but Lafont makes a great save, skying high to tip the ball straight up in the air.

80th min: Penalty, PSG! Red card, Nantes! Jean-Charles, Castelletto is sent off for yanking down Neymar right on the penalty spot! The Brazilian was all alone, threaded through from the right flank by Paredes. It's a clear red, with no options for the referee.

Neymar steps up to takes, and scores! 4-0 PSG, and the rout is on. The penalty isn't great, but it wrong-foots Lafont who's rooted to the middle as it slides into the net.

78th min: Juan Bernat, on at the water break, has a go from a tight angle on the right, but it's into the side netting. The chance was created by Neymar who deftly skipped by a Nantes midfielder and charged into the top of the area.

On comes Leandro Paredes and Nordi Mukiele for PSG to replace Veratti and Hakimi. It's all but wrapped up for PSG.

71st min: PSG have taken the sting out of this match, with renewed midfield dominance. There's very few opportunities for Nantes on the ball over the last 10 minutes or so, and now a water break brings a stop to the action.

64th min: Nantes have ventured forward a few times since PSG's third, but to no avail. Antoine Kombouare makes a double change with striker Mostafa Mohamed coming on for Marcus Coco, signaling a switch to four at the back. Samuel Moutousammy also comes on for Pedro Chirivella.

57th min: GOAL, PSG! WHAT a goal from Sergio Ramos! A back-heel! On a set-piece delivery by Verratti to Sarabia at the left post comes to Ramos on the doorstep. Lafont gets a fingertip to it, forcing Ramos to backtrack to recover the ball, and he backheels it off the hip of Nicolas Pallois and into the back of the net.

49th min: Chance, Nantes! Nantes look energized to start the half on both ends, and Simon crosses for Guessand who can't get his hander on target. It's challenged by Marquinhos who is second to the ball, but he does enough to put the Nantes striker off.

46th min: The second half is under way in Tel Aviv, with PSG owning a commanding lead. Nantes had a few first-half chances, but they will need more cutting-edge to push for a comeback. It seems more likely that this becomes a bit of a rout.

HALF-TIME: PSG 2-0 Nantes

Galtier looked to have told PSG to wrap things up tactically for the first half, but Neymar wins a silly foul by Sissoko and bags the free-kick strike. A 2-0 lead for PSG at halftime feels a whole lot different for Nantes than 1-0, and Ludovic Blas will need a glittering second half to give the Coupe de France champions any prayer of a comeback.

45+5 min: GOAL, PSG! A brilliant free-kick from Neymar! Messi is a decoy with his left, and instead it's Neymar with his right, a perfect combination of power and curl to get the ball over the wall and into the top-left corner. PSG grab a critical second goal in the dying moments of the first half.

45+3 min: It's a wonder how Castelletto doesn't get a yellow as he yanks Neymar back, with a handfull of the Brazilian's shirt. The referee has a talk with players of both teams.

Moments later, Neymar is hacked by former Watford player Moussa Sissoko at the top of the penalty area, and PSG have a dangerous free-kick. It's a yellow card for Sissoko, and Neymar appears to be holding his knee, taking his time returning to his feet. A worry for PSG, but he's eventually up. Messi and Neymar both standing over the free-kick moments before halftime...

41st min: Chance, Nantes! There's the attacking flow! Unfortunately, Guessand can't find the back of the net with his near-post shot, fed along the end line by Blas. The Nantes playmaker rounded Marquinhos easily, but Kimpembe barely blocks the effort.

38th min: The game has slowed to a crawl. Nantes are matching PSG in midfield, but the attack is disjointed and failing to trouble the PSG back line. Marcus Coco draws a yellow card for a very late trip of Nuno down the left.

31st min: PSG come very close to a real opportunity, but with Nuno wide open down the left, his cross for an equally unmarked Sarabia at the doorstep is too heavy and out of reach.

27th min: The match is momentarily paused for a water break in Tel Aviv, where it's 82 degrees with a 67% humidity.

22nd min: GOAL, PSG! Lionel Messi, after a difficult first season with PSG, opens his 2022/23 account! It's all made by Neymar who weaves through the midfield and sends a feed through the middle. The ball takes a fortunate PSG bounce off one, maybe two Nantes players right into the line of Messi who gets around Lefont and finishes into the open net from a tight angle with his right.

19th min: Chance, Nantes! The Coupe de France title-holders are growing into the match, and Ludovic Blas came so close, only denied by a spectacular Donnarumma save! He whipped a left-footed effort from the top of the penalty area, but Donarumma skied to tip the ball over.

18th min: A half-chance for Nantes as Moses Simon scuffs a shot wide. It fell to the Nigerian off a deflected shot, and his effort was heavily contested by Vitinha.

16th min: Vitinha goes into the book early for a coming-together with Girotto. It's a foul for sure, but a yellow card seems harsh as Girotto came in from the back of Vitinha. The Nantes midfielder's challenge was legal to win the ball, but Vitinha's part in the incident was far from intentional or reckless.

Moments later, Blas with a stunning 360 spin-move to win a foul by a helpless Verratti, my goodness what a silky smooth move!

14th min: Chance, PSG! How has that not gone in?? Off a corner, Kimpembe gets a powerful far-post header back across the goal mouth to his center-back partner Marqinhos on the doorstep. The Brazilian pings the crossbar with a header of his own, and the game remains on zeroes.

12th min: Nantes want a handball called on Sergio Ramos on a cross into the box, but it's not given. The call is the right one, as the ball flicked his hand which was directly by his side. Nothing he could do about that, with his arm in a natural position.

Achraf Hakimi is being whistled by Bloomfield Stadium fans every time he touches the ball for his prior vocal support of Palestine. This isn't new for Hakimi, who suffered the same treatment in last season's Super Cup.

9th min: Vitinha, a new arrival from Porto, makes a great run down the right edge of the penalty area but his chip to the head of Sarabia is just inches off the mark. The 22-year-old Portuguese international has been bright early on.

5th min: Chance, PSG! The first opportunity of the match comes via brilliant one-touch passing in the penalty area. Unselfish play from Messi and Neymar, and Achraf Hakimi takes the eventual shot. The effort is saved well by Alban Lafont, and Hakimi's effort is poor, a low effort within reach of the Nantes goalkeeper despite the goal gaping.

1st min: The match is under way from Tel Aviv! Messi and Neymar leading the way for PSG, and the Ligue 1 champs are expected to possess much of the play, so there should be numerous chances for them to open their 2022/23 accounts.

Pre-match PSG vs. Nantes

18 mins to kickoff: Last season was maybe the most difficult of Lionel Messi's club career. Will he get this campaign started off on the right foot?

35 mins to kickoff: Some transfer news for PSG as Giorginio Wijnaldum, who has been looking for an exit from Parc des Princes this season, could be off to Roma on loan after the two clubs have a breakthrough in negotiations. The sticking had reportedly been Wijnaldum's wages, but PSG have reportedly relinquished ground.

50 mins to kickoff: Lineups are finally out, a few minutes late. No surprises for PSG, with Pablo Sarabia up front in place of the suspended Kylian Mbappe. Vitinha gets the start in midfield over Leandro Paredes.

There was some confusion over the Nantes starting lineup, but it was finally announced by the club with 30 minutes to kickoff. 21-year-old Evan Guessand, on loan from Nice, beats Mostafa Mohamed to the striker role, while there are some surprises at the back. Former Manchester United player Fabio is on the bench after initially appearing to be in the lineup.

80 mins to kickoff: The danger man for Nantes today will be France youth international Ludovic Blas, who has 10 goals and five assists in each of the last two league campaigns.

He was the key for Nantes through the Coupe de France last year as well, bagging five goals in six Cup games including the only strike of the final against Christophe Galtier's Nice to secure a 1-0 win. He's reportedly being chased by LOSC Lille, will he have one final say for Nantes before potentially securing a move up?

105 mins to kickoff: Kylian Mbappe is suspended for PSG today due to yellow card accumulation last season. He earned his 10th yellow card in the penultimate match of the Ligue 1 campaign. So why wasn't he suspended for the final game of the season?

A funky Ligue 1 quirk sees a player's yellow card suspension take effect two matches after initially triggering the punishment. Had he signed for Real Madrid in the summer, it could have seen Mbappe barred for his first competitive match, as suspensions are usually honored by leagues across the globe when carried over from a previous club.

120 mins to kickoff: Much will be made of Lionel Messi's trophy haul if he can win the Trophee des Champions with PSG. According to those who tabulate these sort of things, he's apparently second only to Dani Alves and his 46 trophies.

PSG vs. Nantes lineups

Lionel Messi, Neymar, and Kylian Mbappe all found the back of the net in the most recent friendly against Japanese side Gamba Osaka, and two of them will be ready to lead the front line in the first competitive match of the season.

Unfortunately, Mbappe is suspended for PSG today due to yellow card accumulation in his penultimate league match of last season, his 10th of the campaign. It's Spanish forward Pablo Sarabia to take over up front, chosen over Mauro Icardi.

PSG's new 22-year-old midfielder Vitinha earned significant playing time in preseason, and he wins out over Leandro Paredes alongside Marco Verratti. Gianluigi Donnarumma is in net, and projects to be the starting goalkeeper despite his stumbles last season, with Keylor Navas again to ride the bench.

PSG starting lineup (3-4-3, right to left): Donnarumma (GK) — Kimpembe, Marquinhos, Ramos — Mendes, Verratti, Vitinha, Hakimi — Neymar, Messi, Serabia.

PSG subs (9): Navas (GK), Bernat, Diallo, Mukilele, Paredes, Danilo, Cana, Kalumendo, Icardi.

Nantes enter the match coming off a 1-0 loss to Rennes in midweek as they wrapped up a preseason slate with two wins (vs. Caen, Lorient) and two losses (vs. Rennes, Guingamp).

Prolific creative force Ludovic Blas will head the attack after finishing last season with 15 goals and five assists across all competitions. The remainder of the Nantes attacking line, however, is a patchwork bunch, with Moses Simon and 21-year-old Nice loanee Evann Guessand leading the forward line. Guessand beat Mostafa Mohamed to the striker role alongside more free-flowing attacker Simon.

Nantes starting lineup (5-3-2, right to left): Lafont (GK) — Casteletto, Pallois, Girotto, Coco, Appiah — Sissoko, Blas, Chirivella — Simon, Guessand.

Nantes subs (9): Descamps (GK), Corchia, Merlin, Fabio, Doucett, Moutossamy, Achi, Yepi Yepi, Mohamed.
