Qatar became the first World Cup hosts to be eliminated after two group-stage matches as they fell to Senegal 3-1 last time out.

Sitting on zero points through the first two matches, head coach Felix Sanchez and his squad will be desperate to give the home fans something to savor before they bow out of this year's tournament.

They'll get their final chance against the Netherlands, who lead the group with four points but have looked extremely shaky throughout the tournament. Their opening victory over Senegal required two very late goals from Cody Gakpo and Davy Klaassen, while their second match resulted in just a 1-1 draw against a pesky Ecuador side that impressed throughout.

A win for the Netherlands would secure the group's top spot, while a draw would also be enough to see them through to the knockout stage but could leave them vulnerable as the group leader.

Netherlands vs Qatar odds

The Netherlands will be heavy favorites given their standing in the European and world stage plus their status as group leaders, but the -700 odds may not be a great reflection of their performances so far. They have looked scattered across both matches against Senegal and Ecuador, needing two late goals to get by the African nation and then troubled throughout by La Tri.

The odds also suggest a potential blowout here, with the over a heavy favorite but both teams to score seeing a massive swing towards the "no" option. This suggests Qatar may not find the back of the net, while Netherlands will trigger the over themselves.

Netherlands vs Qatar: 3 things to know

Netherlands vs Qatar team news

Striker Memphis Depay has struggled with fitness issues of late and has come off the bench in both games, and it's unlikely he'd be risked from the start here with just a draw against the hosts seeing the Dutch through. There's no Georginio Wijnaldum on the roster due to a broken leg early in the season with Roma. Otherwise, there's a fully fit squad for Louis van Gaal.

The 2022 World Cup hosts are without Abdullah Al-Ahrak who tore his ACL in January and could not recover in time, but otherwise they sport a fully healthy squad. They picked up four yellow cards in the opener against Ecuador but managed to survive the Senegal match without anyone earning a second and finding themselves suspended for the group finale.

Netherlands vs Qatar key stats

  • Qatar have already become the first World Cup host nation to be eliminated after two group-stage matches, and only the second host to be eliminated in the group stage.
  • The Netherlands have not lost under Van Gaal since he was hired for his third stint as national team boss in September of 2021 — a run of 17 matches unbeaten.
  • The Oranje have lost just once in a third group-stage match, in 1978 against Scotland. They've won four and drawn three of the other seven.

Netherlands vs Qatar prediction

  • Moneyline lean: Draw (+675)
  • Against the spread lean: Qatar +2.5 (-160)
  • Score prediction: Netherlands 1-1 Qatar

The Netherlands will want to win to see out the top spot in the group, but they could be on upset alert here. As Qatar have already been eliminated from knockout-stage contention, they will know this is their last chance to put in a good performance in front of their home fans.

That drive will be stronger than that of their opponents, who have looked shaky in two matches and know a draw will be enough to see them through. They will want to win the group to avoid a likely matchup with England, but that just doesn't have the same impact as playing for qualification, or playing for your nation's home fans while hosting the World Cup.

Netherlands vs Qatar: best bet

While Qatar have lost twice, they've not looked terrible thus far in group-stage play. They fell to defeat against Ecuador, running into a buzzsaw in Enner Valencia. They struggled to create chances in that match, but Ecuador are a defensively organized side, very different from the Netherlands.

In the second match, a 3-1 defeat to Senegal, they actually won the expected goals battle, scoring one and seeing three other great chances go begging. With some better finishing and another disjointed Netherlands performance, Qatar may be able to grind out a positive result, and even if they fall, the hosts may still have a great chance to keep it close. I just don't see a blowout here.

  • Pick: Both teams to score — Yes
  • Odds: +145 (BetMGM)

While Qatar may not end up victorious, they should be able to pick out a consolation goal. Thus far, the Dutch have conceded 2.57 expected goals against two defensive-minded nations in Senegal and Ecuador. The hosts should find a way through unless the Netherlands figure out a way to improve their defensive structure.
