Melbourne Victory in talks with Tony Popovic as pressure mounts on Grant Brebner image

Melbourne Victory are seemingly exploring their managerial options as a disastrous season on and off the pitch continues.

According to former Socceroo Robbie Slater, the club's board have already spoken to Tony Popovic with pressure mounting on current coach Grant Brebner.

That initial contact came before Victory's 4-1 loss on Wednesday night against Wellington Phoenix with Brebner's side now firmly rooted to the bottom of the A-League ladder.

Victory have lost four straight games and conceded a concerning 17 goals over that time.

Popovic could well be the man to steady the ship with the former Western Sydney Wanderers and Perth Glory coach recently sacked by Greek club Xanthi after a short stint

Brebner, however, remains at the helm of Victory for now and stressed he's not considering resigning anytime soon despite the poor results.

"It's not the type of person I am. I totally understand the position we're in. I understand the expectations of this football club to win games and win trophies," Brebner told Fox Sports post-match.

"i do believe we can get ourselves out of this. I believe the players that will come back into this team will make us better. In the here and now it's tough, but if you're asking me that direct question, no I won't [resign].

"The word to the members and fans is stick with us. The players aren't going out there with a mentality to be defeated. I don't feel I've lost the dressing room, I don't feel I've lost the players - they do still hang off every word and do want to give their all. It's just a really bad situation we're in at the moment.

"I've never shied away from anything. We will face this head on. What I want to do is make sure I'm still giving this job 100 per cent."

Victory next face current A-League leaders Central Coast Mariners in Gosford on Saturday night where a fifth straight loss could prove costly for Brebner.
