Where is Marcelo Bielsa? Why Uruguay coach is not on touchline for Copa America showdown with USA image

Uruguay are closing in on a place in the Copa America 2024 quarterfinals ahead of facing hosts USA in their final Group C game.

Marcelo Bielsa's side secured successive wins over Panama and Bolivia in their opening matches and it would take a heavy defeat to the UMNT in Kansas, plus a Panama win over Bolivia, to potentially deny them a place in the knockouts.

However, despite looking to be in cruise control ahead of facing Gregg Berhalter's team, Uruguay's preparations have been hit by a major setback.

Head coach Bielsa will be absent from the touchline at Arrowhead Stadium, with the veteran coach serving a tournament suspension.

Why is Marcelo Bielsa missing USA vs. Uruguay?

Bielsa was handed a one-game touchline ban by tournament organisers CONMEBOL after bringing his team out late for the second half against Panama and Bolivia.

CONMEBOL confirmed they are determined to enforce rules on players being back out on the pitch for a certain time to allow for the scheduled restart time of matches.

Players and coaches are warned after a first violation, with a repeat offence incurring a ban. Bielsa was also fined $15,000.

His assistant coach Pablo Quiroga will take charge for the clash with Berhalter's USA.

Coaches suspended at 2024 Copa America

The decision to suspend Bielsa is not the first time tournament officials have enforced this rule at the 2024 Copa America.

Argentina boss Lionel Scaloni was suspended for their final group game — a 2-0 win over Peru — for the same offence. Ricardo Gareca of Chile and Fernando Batista of Venezuela were also handed bans as part of a crackdown on poor timekeeping and accusations of unsportsmanlike conduct.
