OLD TRAFFORD, MANCHESTER — Manchester United became the first team to reach the fourth round of the FA Cup after beating Everton 3-1 on Friday.

Conor Coady, having earlier cancelled out a quick-fire opener from Antony, scored a second-half own goal before a very late penalty from Marcus Rashford gave the Red Devils a fifth win in a row in all competitions since the World Cup break.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin thought he had made it 2-2, but the goal was disallowed for offside following a VAR check.

The result keeps United competing for four trophies, but it’s one that will increase the pressure on Everton boss Frank Lampard ahead of potentially key Premier League games against Southampton and West Ham.

Man United vs. Everton final score

  1H 2H FT
Man United 1 3 3
Everton 1 1 1

Goals: MAN — Antony — 4th min

            EVE — Coady — 14th min

            MAN — Coady (OG) — 52nd min

            MAN — Rashford (pen) — 97th min

Reeling from a 4-1 home loss to Brighton & Hove Albion, the Everton fans — who had chorused "sack the board" before kick-off — must have feared the worst when Antony slid in to convert Rashford’s low cross after just four minutes.

However, Old Trafford was stunned 10 minutes later after Neal Maupay's cross somehow went through the legs of David de Gea to present Coady with a tap-in.

United were the more dominant side but it was not until the second half that their lead was restored, Coady scoring from a very similar position, only against his own goalkeeper this time, following fine work from Rashford.

Substitute Dominic Calvert-Lewin thought he had levelled for Everton again when he chested in a cross from the impressive Demarai Gray, but the goal was disallowed for offside in the build-up.

That seemed to kill Everton’s hopes as United went back on the front foot, and Rashford’s cool penalty with practically the last kick of the game sealed their progress after Alejandro Garnacho was tripped.

Marcus Rashford: Man United leader

"The difference was Marcus Rashford," Lampard said after the match, and while that somewhat glosses over United's general superiority in the contest, there is no doubt United's No.10 was the key.

He had already made two lively runs with the ball before driving into the area and crossing for Antony to open the scoring, and he continued in that manner, matching dynamism in attack with a willingness to track back and cover in defence — a willingness that has often not been on display in his United career.

His penalty, rolled in after a Neymar-esque dummy, underlined the confidence with which Rashford is playing. "This is up there with the best I've been," he admitted to ITV Sport.

Rashford is the first United player to score in seven games in a row at Old Trafford since Wayne Rooney a decade ago. Could we see another United No.10 keep up this form, further embrace his responsibilities and become the Red Devils' most important player, or even captain? You wouldn't bet against it.

Everton must bottle this fighting spirit

Everton delivered a superb, committed performance on their last visit to Manchester as they held City to a 1-1 draw in the league. Frank Lampard got a similar effort from his players here at Old Trafford, even if they quality in midfield and the attacking third was sometimes lacking. "I thought we deserved a draw," Lampard said. "Sometimes, individuals of Rashford's quality can have their moments."

If they played with this sort of resolve every week, they would be enjoying a far stronger season. The problem is that displays such as that at the Etihad Stadium tend to be followed by the kind that was seen in the 4-1 hammering by Brighton.

Lampard's players clearly have some bottle; only a marginal offside denied them a second equaliser here, and they worked tirelessly until the end even as the result slipped away. They must now show it in two coming league matches against fellow strugglers Southampton and West Ham. If they don't, Lampard could be out of a job, and his team stuck further in relegation trouble.

Man United vs. Everton full commentary, highlights

FT: That’s that! United are into round four. Everton put up a spirited display, but it's another defeat for them, and more pressure to come on the shoulders of Frank Lampard.

90th + 7 mins: UNITED MAKE IT 3-1! They've been threatening throughout injury time, and after Alejandro Garnacho tumbled in the box, player-of-the-match Marcus Rashford dispatched a confident penalty. Game over.

Watch Rashford's penalty (USA):

(UK):

90th + 1 min: Demarai Gray, who has been Everton’s brightest player, brings a low save out of David de Gea. We're into at least six minutes of added time.

89th min: Amadou Onana is booked for a poor tackle on Lisandro Martinez, 25 yards from the Everton goal. Marcus Rashford hits a dipping shot, which Jordan Pickford touches over the bar.

85th min: Scott McTominay and Harry Maguire come on as United look to see out a narrow win. Expect a bombardment of Everton crosses in these closing minutes.

80th min: Fabulous skill from Antony in the Everton half, but Fred has the ball nicked off him. Moments later, he returns the favour to stop a counter-attack.

Watch Antony's turn (USA):

73rd min: EVERTON EQUALISE — no, it's disallowed! Seamus Coleman and Demarai Gray combine superbly, the latter skips past Tyrell Malacia and Dominic Calvert-Lewin scores with his chest, but a VAR check spots an offside. Those blue flares in the away end were lit too soon.

66th min: Bruno Fernandes! Fabulous strike from 25 yards out, which Jordan Pickford tips over. United work the corner to the other side, Abdoulaye Doucoure trips Marcus Rashford, and he’s booked.

64th min: Chance for 2-2! Abdoulaye Doucoure bursts into the box down the right wing. Raphael Varane halts his run, the ball breaks to Seamus Coleman, and David de Gea sticks out a foot to keep out his low shot. Neal Maupay was sliding in on the rebound, but Luke Shaw blocked the open goal.

60th min: United have controlled possession since the goal and Everton are looking dispirited again. "You're getting sacked in the morning," chants the Stretford End (presumably at Frank Lampard, not Erik ten Hag).

52nd min: UNITED ARE AHEAD AGAIN! Would you believe it — Conor Coady has scored in his own net! Marcus Rashford takes on Seamus Coleman brilliantly, crosses low from the left, and Coady diverts the ball into his own goal.

Watch United retake the lead (USA):

(UK):

50th min: Alex Iwobi gets a big round of applause as he is carried off. Abdoulaye Doucoure will replace him

46th min: United start the second half on the front foot but Casemiro gives the ball away and Alex Iwobi races away on the break. Tyrell Malacia tears after him and makes a fine sliding challenge, but Iwobi seemed to catch his studs in the turf and looks in serious discomfort. It looks like he twisted his ankle, and he’ll have to go off on a stretcher.

45th + 1 min: Everton hold out during some late United pressure, and it's level at halftime.

40th min: So close from Christian Eriksen! Diogo Dalot's challenge on Idrissa Gueye is deemed fair, Eriksen collects the ball and tries to bend a shot left-footed into the top-left corner, but it’s inches too high.

34th min: End-to-end stuff here! Anthony Martial lays off to Tyrell Malacia instead of shooting, Everton break, but the move breaks down. Marcus Rashford races back the other way after gathering the ball and his hopeful shot is beaten away by Jordan Pickford.

30th min: After a bit of a scuffle between Marcus Rashford and Ben Godfrey, Bruno Fernandes is booked for standing on Amadou Onana's heel. It was good defending from the Everton man before then.

26th min: It’s all got a bit scrappy, with neither side quite able to put together some meaningful possession. United seem a bit confounded to have conceded a goal for the first time since before the World Cup.

21st min: United have been far more threatening since the equaliser, which came as a real shock to pretty much everyone in the ground, not least the goalscorer himself. Anthony Martial has another effort from Bruno Fernandes’ layoff, but it’s blocked.

16th min: United should lead again! Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial combine, the Frenchman charges towards goal, but Jordan Pickford denies him one-on-one!

14th min: EVERTON ARE LEVEL! What on earth was David de Gea doing? The United keeper tries to block a low cross from the right with his legs, the ball squirms between them, and it's Conor Coady who taps it in!

Watch Coady's equaliser (USA):

(UK):

12th min: Nearly an equaliser! United are sleeping in defence, the ball breaks to Demarai Gray on the edge of the box, and his fierce low strike hits the base of the left-hand post, comes off the back of David de Gea's head, and goes out for a corner!

10th min: United's attacks keep breaking down but Everton are too quick to give them the ball back. Marcus Rashford is eventually crowded out in the box this time before Casemiro half-volleys an ambitious effort over the bar.

4th min: UNITED TAKE THE LEAD! What a start for the home side! Anthony Martial shrugs off James Tarkowski in the centre-circle and plays it wide to Marcus Rashford. He charges into the box and plays a low cross towards the right-hand post, where Antony slides in unmarked to score.

Watch Antony's goal (USA):

(UK):

KO: Everton get us underway!

5 mins before KO: The players are just emerging from the tunnel. There’s a deafening noise from the busy away end, most of which is angry singing directed at the Everton board.

20 mins before KO: Not long to go now until the third round of the FA Cup gets underway!

40 mins before KO: Ten Hag has resisted the temptation to field an inexperienced side, which is perhaps not surprising: as he said in his pre-match programme notes, United "aim to do well in every competition and win every game we play". Still, you'd expect him to make changes against Charlton next week, with Manchester City and Arsenal to come before the end of January.

1 hr before KO: The team news is in, and United have named a strong side, which suggests there will be more rotation for next week's League Cup match with Charlton Athletic.

Diogo Dalot returns at right-back, while Tyrell Malacia is on the other flank, with Luke Shaw keeping his place at centre-back. Antony, Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial all start. New signing Jack Butland is not involved.

Everton are also going with a strong team in what looks to be a 5-3-2, with Neal Maupay and Demarai Gray, who scored that stunner against Man City, leading the attack.

1 hr 20 mins before KO: This game would normally be something of a free hit for Everton, who wouldn't be expected to overcome the 20-time champions of England on home turf. However, given the pressure on manager Frank Lampard, they could really do with a good result: the five-time FA Cup champions haven't won a match since October, and that 4-1 home thrashing by Brighton three days ago has left Lampard on perilous ground. Another heavy defeat here, and it might just spell the end of his time in charge.

1 hr 40 mins before KO: The last time these teams met in the FA Cup was in April 2016 - the year United last lifted the trophy. They beat the Toffees 2-1 at Wembley in the semifinals, with Anthony Martial scoring an injury-time winner. The French striker is an injury doubt for tonight but Erik ten Hag thinks he will be fit to play.

2 hrs before KO: Manchester United look to continue their good form since the World Cup and keep their quest alive to challenge for a possible four trophies this season. As for Everton, only a surprise positive result it likely to ease the significant pressure on manager Frank Lampard. We're live at Old Trafford to bring you coverage of this FA Cup encounter — the first of the third round.
