Liverpool's final mid-season friendly before the return of domestic football will see them take on AC Milan on Friday, December 16.

The Dubai Super Cup friendly tournament, which also features Arsenal and Lyon, concludes with this fixture.

Liverpool's season resumes just four days after the World Cup final, when they'll take on Premier League Manchester City in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup on December 22. It's the sternest possible test for the holders at this stage, who will travel to Aston Villa on Boxing Day in the first post-World Cup matchday in the league.

The Reds' first mid-season friendly didn't exactly go to plan as they lost 3-1 to Lyon despite opening the scoring through Fabio Carvalho will less than 60 seconds on the clock. A brace from ex-Arsenal striker Alexander Lacazette — either side of a Bradley Barcola strike — condemned Liverpool to defeat, and Lyon also triumphed 5-3 in the post-game penalty shootout for good measure.

Milan also tasted defeat in their opening Dubai Super Cup game, losing 2-1 to Arsenal and 4-3 in the penalty shootout. England defender Fikayo Tomori scored a late consolation for the Rossoneri, but with both of these sides having lost one of their two matches, neither will be able to catch Arsenal, who obtained maximum points to win the trophy.

Which players are available for Liverpool?

Jurgen Klopp's men have had to use a heavily rotated side due to injuries and players not yet back from the World Cup, but they still have the likes of Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino in the squad.

Luis Diaz has been out of action since he was injured at the Emirates Stadium during Liverpool's 3-2 loss to Arsenal in October. There was optimism that he would be available during the friendlies, but he has since been handed an injury setback that could see him out of action for a further three months.

Harvey Elliott featured against Lyon but is a doubt after suffering a knock in that match. As well as Diaz, Diogo Jota and Arthur Melo continue to recover from long-term injuries. Naby Keita has been brought back into the side by Klopp and could come into the starting lineup as he seeks to return to match fitness.

Dubai Super Cup: Why will there be a penalty shootout in Liverpool vs. AC Milan?

The set of friendlies these two sides are involved in is the Dubai Super Cup, which also features Arsenal and Lyon. They'll each play two games in a round-robin tournament, in which they'll get the customary three points for a win, and two, rather than one, for a draw.

However, penalty shootouts will take place after each of the four games, with the winners of the shootout gaining an extra bonus point. The team who finish top of the table are crowned champions.
