Former Liverpool goalkeeper Bruce Grobbelaar reveals peeing on Anfield goalposts to break Premier League curse image

Former Liverpool goalkeeper Bruce Grobbelaar has revealed he once peed on Anfield's goalposts to help them lift the 2019/20 Premier League trophy.

Grobbelaar was told that in Africa if a pitch was cursed then the remedy was to pee on the posts, and the ex-goalkeeper admits he watered the Anfield pitch in his own special way before Liverpool's title charge in 2019/20.

The bizarre incident came during a corporate game played at Anfield in 2019 and the shot-stopper found a unique way to get the deed done.

"In Africa, if the pitch was cursed then you peed on the posts," Grobbelaar told FourFourTwo

"So when I came back to live in England, I was asked to play in the corporate game at Anfield. I told the story to Tage Herstad, the fan who invited me, and he said, 'Bruce, you've got to do the business'.

"So I peed in a bottle, poured it all down the posts and crossbar at both ends, and saved a penalty at the Anfield Road End. Then the Reds went on an undefeated run at Anfield and won the Premier League!"

Liverpool ended a 30-year wait to be crowned English champions in 2019/2020. However, the title has eluded the club since, with the Reds pipped to top spot by Manchester City last season by a single point.

The Reds have made their worst start to a season in 2022/23 under Jurgen Klopp and host Bournemouth next looking for their first win of the campaign.

Grobbelaar, now 64, played over 400 games for Liverpool between 1981 and 1994.

He won the then Football League First Division six times with the Reds and also helped the club win the European Cup in 1984.

Since retiring as a player, Grobbelaar has dabbled in management and worked as a goalkeeping coach in various countries.
