Sweden's women's football team have written to FIFA as they push for their Olympics gold-medal match against Canada to be rescheduled.
The decisive game is set to be held in Tokyo on Friday and kick-off at 11am local time when the temperature is expected be around 30°C with a humidity of 70 per cent.
A variety of athletes at the Olympics have already had to deal with challenging weather conditions at the Games and Sweden have formally requested their match time be changed to protect the health of their players.
Every other football game at the tournament has so far been held in the late afternoon or evening with the men's gold medal match to be held at 8.30pm on Saturday night.
Sweden are ready to play the final whenever they are asked to but are hoping for a time change with Canada also seemingly in favour of kicking off later on Friday.
"I myself have been in contact with FIFA today and written to them, so that's about where the situation is today," Marika Domanski Lyfors, the head of Sweden's women's team, said via Reuters.
"It is primarily about the players' health we're thinking about and trying to change the time of the game.
"There's a pretty big difference between playing in the afternoon or evening, and we are very much exposed to the warmth and heat.
"If we have to play at 11 o'clock in the morning then we are prepared, but it would clearly be much better to for the performance and the game to have the possibility to play it later. Canada have exactly the same opinion."
Sweden go into the gold-medal match in fine form having won all five of their matches at the tournment - including a tight semi-final victory over the Matildas on Monday.
Canada, meanwhile, won one and drew two of their group games before beating Brazil on penalties in the quarter-finals and stunning the United States 1-0 in the semi-finals.
Prior to the final, Australia and the USWNT will face off in Kashima on Thursday night in a match to decide who walks away with bronze.
The Matildas have never won an Olympics medal, while the United States have previously picked up four gold and one silver medal.
