Why are the main awards named after Johnny Warren and Julie Dolan?

The award for best A-League Men's player is named after Australian football legend Johnny Warren.

Warren, who passed away in 2004, worked tirelessly to promote football in Australia after the end of his playing career.

He played for the Socceroos on 42 occasions and wore the captain's armband in 24 of those matches.

Warren was known for using the catch-cry 'I told you so' when predicting the rise of football in Australia prior to his death.

The award for best A-League Women's player is named after Julie Dolan, who was a pioneer for women's football in Australia, representing the Matildas 18 times and scoring four goals.

She made her debut for the national team at 14 and was the team's first captain.
