Crystal Palace vs Manchester United score, result as Michael Olise breaks United hearts and Casemiro suspended for Arsenal image

Manchester United entered Selhurst Park with two goals in mind.

Win to secure all three points and move within six points of leaders Arsenal was the top prize for Erik ten Hag, but the Red Devils also had one eye on Casemiro, who was sitting on four yellow cards with a game against the Gunners looming on Sunday.

United whiffed on both achievements. With the Red Devils leading down the stretch thanks to Bruno Fernandes's opener before the break, Michael Olise deposited an 89th minute free-kick into the back of the net to level the score and share the points in a 1-1 draw, minutes after Casemiro had clumsily picked up his dreaded booking to see him trigger a suspension for the weekend's huge game.

The draw sees United leap Newcastle United into third in the Premier League table, but surely this result will feel like two points lost for ten Hag's squad, who were exceptional in the first half but dipped significantly after the break, with a 1-1 scoreline ultimately a fair result.

The Sporting News was following the match live and provided score updates, commentary and highlights as they happened.

Crystal Palace vs Man United live updates, highlights, commentary

FULLTIME: Crystal Palace 1-1 Man United

Manchester United squandered the lead and lost Casemiro for the Arsenal match in the process. What a mess!

The Red Devils see their winning streak halted at nine matches across all competitions, and it couldn't have come at a worse moment. In addition, Casemiro is suspended for the Arsenal match to compound their heartbreak.

Crystal Palace, meanwhile, earn a huge point to end a poor run of form, and for now staving off a tumble into the relegation battle.

Crystal Palace vs. Man United: Second half

90+4 min: What a tackle by Aaron Wan-Bissaka! Wilfried Zaha is on the break free on goal, with the game exploding into a wide-open, end-to-end affair. Somehow, the old Palace defender manages to recover and make a sensational tackle, somehow bundling the attacker over but also getting the ball to end the chance. That was close!

90+3 min: Chance, Man United! The Red Devils are pouring numbers forward in the hopes of restoring the lead at the death, and Casemiro came so close! The corner-kick delivery is awkwardly stung across the face of goal, and Casemiro charges in freely and should score, but the ball clumsily clips off his knee and skitters away. He had the whole goal to shoot at!

89th min: GOAL! CRYSTAL PALACE! Just as four minutes of added time are shown, Crystal Palace find their equaliser on a free-kick! The best set-piece team in the league produce another as Michael Olise's free-kick stunner crushes Manchester United hearts. The Red Devil coaching staff is a lonely bunch on the touchline and Selhurst Park is alight.

Watch in the USA:

Watch in the UK:

83rd min: Fred comes on, and while he could have replaced Casemiro had he not been booked, instead it's Christian Eriksen that comes off after the Brazilian's already picked up his suspension. Manchester United hanging on by a thread.

80th min: Oh no! Casemiro is booked for a very, very clumsy challenge that was a blatant yellow card. He's out of the Arsenal match on Sunday! That was a truly moronic tackle, there was no need for it, leaving his feet to fly in with both boots.

Erik ten Hag should have taken him off earlier, it's a wonder why he wasn't. The Man United manager has a long shake of the head on the touchline, he knows he's made a mistake.

Watch in the UK:

79th min: Casemiro comes to the rescue again with United defenders pushed high up the field. It's all a bit worrying for the visitors at Selhurst Park at the moment, clinging to this slim 1-0 lead.

75th min: Chance, Crystal Palace! Another huge moment for David de Gea! A corner delivery gets over the head of Raphael Varane, and Marc Guehi is there to meet it with his head, but de Gea dives to his left and palms it away! It's his second huge save of the evening! Palace are drawing closer...

72nd min: Big penalty shout for Manchester United! Chris Richards steps in strongly on Scott McTominay and it's unclear whether he gets a touch on the ball. The official waves away the shouts, and while on replay it looks worrying for the American defender, the decision survives a VAR review and play continues.

Crystal Palace have made a change, with Jordan Ayew and Jeffrey Schlupp on for Cheick Doucoure and Odsonne Edouard. Attacking changes for the trailing side.

68th min: United are slowing things down and taking the air out of the ball. They're happy to knock the ball around and ask Palace to win the ball back. Scott McTominay and Alejandro Garnacho are brought into the fray, with Antony and Wout Weghorst brought off. It's a change in formation, with Marcus Rashford likely to take up the central striker role. A bit surprising Casemiro was not withdrawn given his disciplinary situation.

62nd min: Casemiro makes yet another interception, and the plaudits for his performance start to roll in. His passing has been high-risk, just 36/56 so far, but he's made three successful tackles tonight on six attempts, and is 6/7 on ground duels, which is outstanding. Most importantly, he hasn't picked up a yellow card yet, which would potentially see him suspended for the Arsenal game on Sunday.

60th min: A decent chance for Crystal Palace but the substitute Eberechi Eze fires wide left. It was started by Wilfried Zaha who sent in a second-chance cross after his initial ball was blocked well by Luke Shaw. Crystal Palace are starting to gain a foothold on the match.

55th min: Crystal Palace have something to think about as Michael Olise may be in some trouble here after a knee injury, but he'll stay on. Instead, it's Jean-Philippe Mateta who comes off as Patrick Viera turns to Ebrechi Eze off the bench.

There's an idiot on the field who approaches Casemiro and is finally escorted off after quite a worrying delay.

47th min: Lisandro Martinez is the first of the game into the referee's book, dragging back Wilfried Zaha and giving Crystal Palace a set-piece opportunity, where they excel. It's wasted and cleared this time, however.

46th min: Poor Will Hughes is taking a beating today! He took a powerful Casemiro screamer to the chest in the first half, and now not even a minute into the second half he's the victim of a Rashford shot right to the gut. Someone get out the ice!

Kickoff: The second half is under way. No changes for either side, as expected. Both managers will be largely content with most of the first 45 minutes, as United lead but Palace made things difficult for large stretches. The hosts will need to keep an eye on their attacking contributions so far, however, and could use with some inspired substitutions if the deficit remains.

HALFTIME: Crystal Palace 0-1 Man United

10 mins to 2H kick: For U.S. fans wanting to keep an eye on Chris Richards, he's had quite a good match against United overall. He wasn't explicitly at fault for the United goal, although both he and Marc Guehi got sucked in towards goal by Wout Weghorst, leaving Bruno Fernandes all alone at the penalty spot. That's shared responsibility within the Palace squad, when either one of the centre-backs or a midfielder could have covered that area.

For the opening 45 minutes, he's 13/15 passing, including 3/5 on long balls, and is 1/1 tackling with four clearances, 2/2 on ground duels, and 0/1 aerially. His highlight was racing back to beat Antony to a vertical ball down the right.

Halftime: Manchester United took nearly the entire half to work a goal, but they go into the halftime break with their noses in front thanks to one sensational save by David de Gea and one smart finish from Bruno Fernandes.

United are leaning on role players outside of just their goalscorers, which is the mark of a good team. Luke Shaw, Christian Eriksen, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Casemiro all had a solid role to play in that first half. Palace, meanwhile, have looked mostly strong off the ball, but haven't been able to work much going forward.

Crystal Palace vs Man United: First half

43rd min: GOAL! MAN UNITED! Bruno Fernandes puts the Red Devils in front! Moments after De Gea's incredible save, United take full advantage. It all starts with Christian Eriksen down the left, charging down the flank from midfield. He cuts the ball back for Fernandes who is completely unmarked right on the penalty spot. The finish is an easy one, all alone after Wout Weghorst dragged both centre-backs to the mouth of goal.

Watch in the USA:

Watch in the UK:

40th min: Chance, Crystal Palace! WHAT A SAVE DAVID DE GEA! Odsonne Edouard fires a ripper that's destined for the top-left corner, but the Spanish netminder produces a sensational save to tip it up, off the crossbar, and out! It's the best chance of the match for either side, but De Gea is there to save United!

Watch in the UK:

38th min: Manchester United have a great set-piece chance as Luke Shaw is felled by Cheick Doucoure. It's from a central location about 28 yards out, and Marcus Rashford takes, whipping it over the wall but well wide left. A relatively poor effort.

37th min: WHAT a job by Luke Shaw on Wilfried Zaha, as the England international races back in full gear to beat Zaha to a ball down the right flank. Exceptional defending from the Man United full-back who's become one of the most important players to the Red Devils squad!

33rd min: Luke Shaw hacks down Wilfried Zaha on the counter-attack, and he's lucky not to obtain a yellow card for the tactical foul. He'll take that, after United had finally coughed up possession and Palace looked to break.

Palace waste the set-piece chance, and then Bruno Fernandes wastes an effort from distance as he curls a shot well wide of the far post.

31st min: Chance, Man United! Luke Shaw nearly tees up Wout Weghorst from the left flank, but the Dutchman heads it over! Weghorst had found space between the two Palace centre-backs Chris Richards and Marc Guehi to meet the ball aerially.

26th min: The game is beginning to slow a bit now. Chris Richards makes a needed intervention on a through-ball meant for Wout Weghorst. Antony gets in a scuffle on the touchline with Palace full-back Tyrick Mitchell, which the referee sorts out.

Moments later Antony gets into it with his teammate Bruno Fernandes after a ball goes out of play. The two are quite unhappy with each other, shouting at each other from across the pitch, showing quite a bit of frustration. Selhurst Park loves it.

20th min: Play continues now with Martinez off the field, he looks to be ok but will need a new shirt to account for all the blood. May need some patching up too.

Things have gotten a bit chaotic, as Man United nearly put themselves in danger with a poor back-pass, and then immediately go Route One down the other end and come close to springing Antony on the run.

17th min: Play is stopped as birthday boy Lisandro Martinez receives medical treatment for a head injury. There's some blood so this may be a bit. He took a thump on an aerial duel with Jean-Philippe Mateta, maybe a bit of an elbow. Certainly not enough for disciplinary action.

16th min: Chance, Man United! A long spell of attacking possession ends in a Luke Shaw volleyed effort that doesn't miss by much! It beats the goalkeeper but also beats the post, fired just wide right across the face of goal. Great whipped effort that had good pace.

11th min: Chance, Man United! Marcus Rashford is clean through, but he flubs the chance and clips it right to Vincent Guaita! The flag went up anyways, saving Rashford further embarrassment, but it's still not a whiff you'd expect from a player in his kind of form.

9th min: The most dangerous Man United moment so far came from a great one-two move between Luke Shaw and Wout Weghorst to spring Bruno Fernandes down the left. The Portuguese international delivered a delicious outside-of-the-boot curler to Antony in front of goal, but it's just too close to the goalkeeper Vincent Guaita who collects, awkwardly but effectively.

7th min: Palace with another dangerous moment, building forward through the middle and then filtering out wide left to Wilfried Zaha, whose vicious volleyed cross fizzles across the penalty area untouched.

Formations are so often difficult to truly parse out, but Marcus Rashford does seem to be playing as a strike partner for Wout Weghorst. It's fluid, but Rashford seems to have lots of freedom, while Bruno Fernandes is playing off him either out wide or tucked in behind.

4th min: A warning sign for Man United as Crystal Palace get some space in the attack. Odsonne Edouard has a moment to shoot at the top of the penalty area, but the ball gets stuck at his feet. Something United will want to keep in mind, as there was an opening for a moment of danger had Palace capitalised.

2nd min: Manchester United straight into the attack, and Chris Richards is immediately involved with a headed clearance. Will Hughes makes a couple of good early interventions. There are a couple of Palace players who could springboard forward with an impressive performance today.

Kickoff: The match is under way from Selhurst Park! Full debuts on both sides, one for Chris Richards of the hosts and one for Wout Weghorst of the visitors. The two will likely be battling for much of the match, it will be a fascinating contest in the penalty area!

A win for Manchester United today would see them draw within six points of Arsenal ahead of their meeting over the weekend. That would place them firmly in the title race.

Crystal Palace vs Man United: Pre-match news, analysis, and commentary

10 mins to kick: It's a birthday start for Manchester United centre-back Lisandro Martinez, happy birthday to the World Cup winner, who turns 25 today!

18 mins to kick: Wout Weghorst has plenty of doubters in the Premier League after his move to Manchester United. His time at Burnley was ugly, scoring just two goals on 5.2 xG. He has a chance to silence that noise quickly here against Crystal Palace and make a case for his inclusion against Arsenal in a few days.

25 mins to kick: Erik ten Hag was also asked about deploying Casemiro in this match, knowing that if he's booked it would trigger a yellow card suspension for the huge game against Arsenal over the weekend. The Manchester United boss seems to be operating under the strategy that three points now is better than a possible three points then, which is a fair approach.

Ten Hag did see Fred, who is also on a yellow card, to the bench for this one, so he's not risked both at once.

40 mins to kick: Wout Weghorst's first Man United start is the talking point ahead of this match, and the Red Devils media have asked Erik ten Hag how he plans to utilise his new frontman in this game. He's not having it.

60 mins to kick: It's a debut on both sides, as we've been discussion, as lineups are confirmed. Wout Weghorst makes his first Manchester United start up front for the Red Devils, while Chris Richards earns his first Premier League start for the club he joined this past summer.

67 mins to kick: No official lineup news out yet, but reports filtering in from Manchester United journalists seem to suggest that Anthony Martial will not take part and Wout Weghorst will indeed get his first start for the club.

80 mins to kick: New Manchester United striker Wout Weghorst could potentially make his debut for the Red Devils today, but it does seem like it might be a bit early for that. Head coach Erik ten Hag was coy on that possibility in his pre-match press conference, simply saying he wanted to "prepare the team in the right way" for the match. The other options are continuing to deploy an out of form Anthony Martial up front, or moving Marcus Rashford to central striker.

105 mins to kick: U.S. fans will be watching intently as lineups are announced. Crystal Palace is preparing for three weeks without centre-back Joachim Andersen, and Chris Richards could be in contention to replace him at the back. James Tomkins could also be deployed in that spot.

Richards has struggled with injuries since joining Palace in the summer, which have prevented him from earning a place in the squad. Taking on an in-form Manchester United would be quite the way to make your first Premier League start!

120 mins to kick: Ahead of the Premier League clash, Erik ten Hag was asked if he could manage any player either past or present, and he selected his countrymate Johan Cruyff. Aside from Pele, the Dutch legend may have been the single most influential player on the modern game, both as a player and a manager. How many individuals throughout history can say they both have a skill named after them and invented an entirely new tactical concept? Cruyff was an all-time great.

Imagine this Manchester United side with Cruyff as field general! An excellent choice Erik.

Crystal Palace vs Man United lineups & team news

Defender Joachim Andersen had to be replaced for Palace against Chelsea and is a doubt with a calf problem, possibly out as long as three weeks. His replacement is Chris Richards, who makes his first Premier League start, beating out James Tomkins for the spot start.

Starting in midfield is Will Hughes, who hasn't played a full 90 minutes since early November. He replaces Eberechi Eze, while Odsonne Edouard earns a rare start in place of regular striker Jordan Ayew.

Midfielder James McArthur remains out with a groin issue and defender Nathan Ferguson has been training individually as he returns to full fitness.

Crystal Palace confirmed starting lineup (4-3-3): Guaita (GK) — Clyne, Richards, Guehi, Mitchell — Hughes, Doucoure — Olise, Mateta, Zaha — Edouard.

Crystal Palace subs (9): Johnstone (GK), Ward, Tomkins, Milivojevic, Schlupp, Riedewald, Eze, Ozoh, Ayew.

Full-back Diogo Dalot (thigh) was forced off during United's 3-0 Carabao Cup win over Charlton Athletic on December 10 and missed the 2-1 comeback victory over Manchester City in the Premier League last Saturday. He sits again here in favor of the healthy Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

Donny van de Beek could sit out the rest of the season with a serious knee injury, while long-term absentees Axel Tuanzebe and Jadon Sancho are also out again. Wout Weghorst gets his first start up front for the club, in place of the absent Anthony Martial, but fellow loanee Jack Butland can't play against his parent club.

Marcus Rashford also a knock in the Manchester derby, but passes a fitness test to start opposite Antony on the wing, with young Alejandro Garnacho benched despite rumors of a long-term deal agreed. Ten Hag has opted against resting Casemiro, who would be banned for the game at Arsenal if they were booked against Palace, as would his fellow midfielder Fred who does not make the Starting XI.

Man United confirmed starting lineup (4-2-3-1): De Gea (GK) — Wan-Bissaka, Varane, L. Martinez, Shaw — Eriksen, Fred — Garnacho, Fernandes, Antony — Rashford.

Man United subs (9): Heaton (GK), Lindelof, Maguire, Malacia, McTominay, Fred, Pellistri, Elanga, Garnacho.

United are odds-on favourites to win three consecutive away league games for the first time in more than two years, with Palace long odds to end their three-match losing home run in all competitions by winning at Selhurst Park for the first time since October 29.

Palace beat United 1-0 at home last season as part of a sequence of three wins in the past six editions of this game in the Premier League, while Wilfried Zaha can become the former United player with the outright most goals against them if he scores in this fixture for a fourth time for the hosts.

Marcus Rashford is also seeking to become the first United player to find the net in eight consecutive appearances since Ruud van Nistelrooy in May 2003.
