Harry Kane ignited a UEFA Champions League comeback for Bayern Munich as they overhauled a 1-0 aggregate deficit in the second leg of their Round of 16 clash with Lazio.

Ciro Immobile's goal was the difference between the teams when they met at the Stadio Olimpico last month but Thomas Tuchel's side got straight on the front foot on Tuesday, backed by a raucous Allianz Arena crowd.

Lazio centre-back Mario Gila Fuentes excelled with some heroic blocks but Bayern's pressure eventually told in the 39th minute when Kane converted an opportunistic header from Raphael Guerreiro's scuffed shot.

In first-half stoppage time, Bayern doubled their advantage on the night and went ahead in the tie when Thomas Muller nodded home from Matthijs de Ligt's venomous volley.

Guerreiro and Jamal Musiala each fizzed efforts wide from outside the box before Kane gave Bayern breathing space midway through the second half, poaching a finish from close range after Ivan Provedel saved Leroy Sane's shot.

It's rarely been the case over recent weeks, where poor results have allowed Bayer Leverkusen to take complete control in the Bundesliga title race, but Bayern were starting to enjoy themselves. Musiala took possession on the back foot to complete a sumptuous turn and play in Muller to thump against the post.

It was a result to spare Tuchel's blushes and keep him in a post that he's leaving at the end of the season in any case. But there is no doubt over the new hero of the Allianz Arena. With three minutes to play, Kane charged back to the left-back position, won possession and drew a crude foul. Once again, he made the crowd roar.

Bayern's main man Kane ends long Champions League wait

Things might not be going to plan in the Bundesliga but these were the type of nights that persuaded Kane to swap north London for Bavaria. His expert pieces of penalty-box snaffling represented his first goals in the Champions League knockout stages since he scored against Borussia Dortmund for Tottenham five years ago.

Kane is also onto 33 goals in 33 games for Bayern, the sort of scoring rate his predecessor Robert Lewandowski would have been more than happy to call his own. There might be much mirth about Bayern’s collective struggles since Kane came to town but, make no mistake, this is one of the greatest seasons by and Englishman abroad that there’s ever been. Jude Bellingham's ongoing exploits at Real Madrid and Kevin Keegan's Ballon d'Or-winning period at Hamburg might be the only two to compare.

Thomas Muller hits incredible Champions League stat

Everyone in the capacity crowd thought they'd seen a goal to savour from De Ligt, only to realise Muller had fairly scruffily stuck his head on it to necessitate a VAR offside check. It felt like such an archetypal Thomas Muller moment. Despite all his achievements, the veteran Germany forward is not often named among the greatest players of his era. He is, but not aesthetically.

Muller gets things done by any means necessary. Scuffs, slices, falling over into the ball, slapping it into the turf — so long as it ends up in the net, who cares? You definitely can't argue with the results. Muller has scored half of his Champions League goals in the knockout phase, the highest percentage for any player with 50 or more goals. And he's not finished just yet.
