Saturday, March 30, 2024: the day the greatest Bayern Munich dynasty was finally dealt the death blow.

A 2-0 home defeat to Borussia Dortmund, their first Bundesliga Klassiker loss at the Allianz Arena since April 2014, saw Bayer Leverkusen take a 13-point lead at the top of the table with seven games to play. Xabi Alonso's unbeaten leaders could be champions of Germany on April 21, when, coincidentally, they play Dortmund.

Bayern's 11-year grip on the Bundesliga Meisterschale is finally slipping, like a stein in a sweltering bierkeller in the grasp of a merry dipsomaniac, who has, at last, had one too many.

A penny for the thoughts of Harry Kane.

One of England's greatest ever players (yes, he is), the star striker who led Tottenham Hotspur to a Premier League title challenge and a UEFA Champions League final, joined Bayern last summer in a bid to add trophies to an already exceptional career. It seemed as sure a thing as sure things can be: the Bavarians, after all, have won every league title since 2012/13. Leverkusen, the runaway leaders who have not lost a match of any kind in 2023/24, have never won it. What's happening now is the sort of thing that just shouldn't happen.

And yet, here we are. Leverkusen are three wins from glory, having beaten Hoffenheim on Friday despite losing as late as the 88th minute. Kane, who has scored 31 league goals — the best return of any player in their debut Bundesliga season — has Robert Lewandowski's single-season record in his sights, yet the title is already all but out of reach. It's an absurd situation. Or it would be for anyone not associated with Spurs.

To be clear, Bayern are not losing this title race because of Kane. If anything, the only reason they're anywhere near Leverkusen is because of their centre-forward, whose goals have helped to mask the issues in the team that led to Thomas Tuchel's decision to leave once the season is over. But you couldn't help but think of Spurs' long wait for silverware as Bayern and Kane toiled against a diligent Dortmund on Saturday.

Karim Adeyemi broke the deadlock on the counter-attack, converting from Julian Brandt's throughball with Dortmund's first attack of the match. Bayern responded with plenty of pressure, but Kane somehow missed a header from six yards out without a yellow shirt in sight. Minutes later, Eric Dier failed to score from the goalline itself, Mats Hummels somehow lifting a 35-year-old leg above head height to block the Spurs loanee's nod towards the net.

The second half felt like a non-event, a procession towards disappointment for Bayern. The dominance of possession was there, the passing was crisp, the build-up patterns clearly defined, yet all of it felt like a team going through the motions, knowing, in their heart of hearts, that this was all for nothing. The intensity, aggression, passion of past Klassikers weren't there. The game finished without a yellow card for either side.

To rub salt in the wound, Hummels, sometimes derided for winning lots but not quite enough at Bayern, was imperious. Matthias Sammer, a Ballon d'Or winner as a Dortmund defender and the man who helped bring Hummels to Bayern as sporting director, watched on.

Kane did eventually find the net with a point-blank header but VAR intervened due to offside. That goal came after Julian Ryerson had swept home Dortmund's second anyway, his precise low finish into the corner of the net prompting a collective hands-spreading from the Bayern back four. Around half the crowd had already streamed through the exits by the time Kane's goal was disallowed.

For Dortmund, this was a statement win and one that gave real impetus to their chase for a Champions League place. A first league victory at the home of Germany's dominant club will be celebrated for some time — not least in North Rhine-Westphalia. 'Harry Kane trophies' will go without an update for now.

Bayern Munich vs Borussia Dortmund lineups, team news

There had been concerns around Bayern's star striker Harry Kane due to an ankle injury that saw him miss England's games against Brazil and Belgium, but he returned to team training on March 28 and was in the lineup.

However, goalkeeper Manuel Neuer (adductor tear), Aleksandar Pavlovic (tonsilitis) and Raphael Guerreiro (thigh muscle tear) are all sidelined. Joshua Kimmich therefore continued at right-back, giving Konrad Laimer a chance to start in midfield.

Dortmund have Sebastien Haller back on the bench and right-back Julian Ryerson also returned. Former Bayern midfielder Marcel Sabitzer was not available due to suspension.

Jadon Sancho started after being an unused sub in the 3-1 win over Eintracht Frankfurt prior to the international break.

Borussia Dortmund lineup (4-3-3, right to left): Meyer (GK) — Ryserso, Hummels, Schlotterbeck, Maatsen — Brandt, Can, Nmecha — Sancho, Fullkrug, Adeyemi.
