Emerging Australian coach Jon Brady oversaw an impressive victory in the Carabao Cup on Thursday morning (AEST) as Northampton Town upset Coventry City 2-1.
Playing away from home against a club placed two divisions higher in the football pyramid, Brady's League Two side came from behind to claim an impressive win.
Coventry took the lead after just 13 minutes through Tyler Walker but a second-half brace from Tottenham loanee Kion Etete saw Northampton progress to the second round of the Carabao Cup.
Brady, who was on crutches for the match, grew up in Australia before playing professionally in England and transitioned to coaching with Brackley Town in 2009.
The 46-year-old had been coaching Northampton's youth teams over the past five years before being promoted to the first-team earlier this year following the exit of Keith Curle.
After relegation from League One last season, Northampton appear to be heading in the right direction again under their Aussie manager, who liked what he saw from his side in their win over Coventry.
“It was a strong performance and to come from behind against a Championship side shows real spirit, fight, courage and endeavour," Brady said post-match.
“We started off a bit shaky but we adjusted our shape and grew into the game. We said at half-time we needed to be a bit braver to control the spaces and once we did that and stepped on to the game we looked a real threat.
"Even in our poorer moments in the first half we created some good chances on the break we just needed to be a bit more clinical.
"We showed our flexibility tonight and that we are adaptable. We grew in confidence after a few chances and once we were a bit braver in our shape out of possession we really took it on.
"We’ve got a good group, they are really tight and they all push each other on. Kion is a young man learning his trade, he’ll have strong nights like tonight and he will have bumps in the road but tonight is a strong start for him.
"It was great to see the fans here again and it sends a real tingle down the spine but this is just another step for us and Colchester on Saturday will be a totally different game again.”
Northampton also won their opening game of the League Two season last weekend after seeing off Port Vale 1-0.
