As manager Steven Gerrard approaches what he expects to be his first full season in charge of Aston Villa, the club will be aiming higher than their final position of 14th in the 2021/22 Premier League.

Gerrard had an immediate impact after replacing Dean Smith in November 2021 following a run of five consecutive defeats that led to a sacking some felt was harsh.

The only games Villa did not win in their six fixtures following Gerrard's appointment were narrow defeats to eventual Premier League champions Manchester City and nearest contenders Liverpool.

Villa struggled for form after that run and will be hoping to find more consistency in the 2022/23 Premier League campaign. Here's how their schedule is looking:

Aston Villa in the FA Cup, Carabao Cup

Villa were unfortunate in the 2021/22 FA Cup, losing by the only goal of the game at Manchester United in the third round in a result their performance did not deserve. They will return to that competition in January.

The Villans' luck was no better in the third round of the Carabao Cup, in which they were beaten on penalties at Chelsea in the same round. Villa will be back in the Carabao Cup in November.

Aston Villa Premier League betting odds

Villa's performance last season fell precisely between the numbers that mattered in their previous two seasons, earning 10 fewer points than their 11th-placed finish of 2020/21 and 10 more than 2019/20, when they narrowly avoided relegation.

Bookmakers evidently now rate Villa's talented squad, which includes the likes of Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez, England defender Tyrone Mings, former Liverpool Player of the Season Philippe Coutinho and Three Lions striker Ollie Watkins along a strong spine. Gerrard will look at the example of West Ham last season and feel European qualification is the ambition.

Aston Villa best & worst Premier League finish

Villa finished second in the inaugural Premier League season in 1992/93, also claiming fourth in 1995/96 and fifth the following campaign.

Their best spell since then started in the 2007/08 season, which was the first of three successive years in which they finished sixth under former boss Martin O'Neill.

A first relegation from the Premier League arrived in 2015/16, when Villa finished bottom after their worst-ever season in the division. They spent three seasons in the Championship before returning.
