Arsenal and Chelsea have built up a gritty rivalry in the Premier League era with Arsene Wenger's clashes with Jose Mourinho going down in club folklore.

Mourinho's arrival triggered Chelsea as a third force in the Premier League title reckoning, alongside Wenger's Arsenal, and Sir Alex Ferguson's Manchester United.

Arsenal vs Chelsea matches have developed into a measuring stick for the Gunners progress in recent seasons with games against the Blues typically testing their mentality and fight in big games.

Wenger and Mourinho might have departed but the rivalry still burns. Mikel Arteta's Arsenal racked up their record competitive victory in the fixture when they thrashed Chelsea 5-0 in pursuit of Premier League glory in 2023/24, underlining the latest shift in the balance of power.

Arsenal vs Chelsea in the Premier League

In 62 Premier League meetings, Arsenal are still ahead of Chelsea, with 26 wins, compared to 20, and 17 draws.

Arsenal won 13 of their 22 Premier League meetings against the Blues prior to the Roman Abramovich era from 2003/04, when the dial began to shift.

Mourinho went unbeaten in his eight games against Arsenal, across all competitions, as Didier Drogba and Michael Essien scored some memorable goals.

Drogba continued to inspire Chelsea against Arsenal, after Mourinho's departure and on his return for a second spell at Stamford Bridge.

However, the arrival of Arteta has changed the direction back in Arsenal's favour, despite the Basque coach losing his first home game in charge to the Blues in December 2019.

Since then, Arsenal have lost just once to Chelsea in all competitions, including the 2019 FA Cup final and three consecutive Premier League victories at the Bridge before a 2-2 draw in October 2023.

Arsenal vs Chelsea in the FA Cup

Arsenal have enjoyed a better FA Cup record than Chelsea in their FA Cup meetings with eight cup clashes in the Premier League era.

Wenger's side sealed the Premier League and FA Cup double in 2002, as Ray Parlour and Freddie Ljungberg scored the goals to beat Chelsea in the latter final.

However, Chelsea were able to gain some revenge by knocking Arsenal out at the semifinal stage in 2009, but Arsenal finished on top again in 2017 and 2020.

Aaron Ramsey's late goal clinched Wenger's final trophy as Arsenal boss in 2017, before Arteta lifted his first title as Arsenal head coach, in 2020, against Frank Lampard.

Arsenal vs Chelsea in Europe

The two sides have only met three times in European action, with Chelsea emerging victorious in both UEFA Champions League and Europa League match ups.

The 2003/04 campaign was the first Chelsea season under the ownership of Abramovich, and Claudio Ranieri's side edged out the Gunners 3-2 on aggregate in the quarterfinals.

Despite boasting huge stars in their ranks, Arsenal again failed to step up in the Champions League, as the unlikely figure of Wayne Bridge netted a second-leg winner.

The 2019 Europa League final was a cruise for Chelsea, as Eden Hazard inspired them to victory, over Arsenal, with a 4-1 win in Baku.

Arsenal vs Chelsea trophies won

Arsenal hold the advantage in overall First Division/Premier League titles, but Chelsea have an edge over the Gunners in terms of recent league title wins, with five Premier League trophies compared to Arsenal's three.

Arsenal are the most successful team in FA Cup history, with 14 titles, but Chelsea's two UEFA Champions League titles is a reminder of the north London side's struggles in Europe.
