He won three A-League grand finals as a player and now Archie Thompson will be looking to claim victory in a very different kind of arena.

The former Socceroo has been confirmed as one of 10 contestants for the new season of Celebrity MasterChef on Channel 10.

Network 10 incidentally recently picked up a heap of Australian football broadcast rights including the A-League that kicks in from next season.

Thompson, who played 54 times for Australia, has been working as a pundit for Fox Sports since hanging up his boots and will now be looking to show off his killer instincts in the kitchen.

The 42-year-old isn't the only sports personality on the new MasterChef season with swimming icon Ian Thorpe and former AFL star Nick Riewoldt also set to compete.

Thompson's inclusion however has football fans excited to see the colourful character show off his cooking skills.

The new season of Celebrity MasterChef will kick off late this year with other contestants including: Rebecca Gibney, Matt Le Nevez, Collette Dinnigan, Dami Im, Chrissie Swan, Dilruk Jayasinha and Tilly Ramsey.

Thompson was forced to watch his former club Melbourne Victory pick up the wooden spoon in the A-League this season and he did at one stage offer to return to the club in some capacity if needed
