A-League grand final prize money: Is there any on offer for the winners? image

After a turbulent season and a dramatic week contending with COVID-19 outbreaks, the A-League grand final will take place on Sunday at AAMI Park

Premiers Melbourne City have retained their hosting rights and will welcome a Sydney FC side that were forced to travel to Victoria early to avoid being locked out

The Sky Blues are chasing a third-straight A-League championship, while Patrick Kisnorbo's side are eyeing off their first.

But aside from pride and the famous 'toilet seat' trophy, is there any financial reward for winning the A-League grand final?

A-League grand final prize money

The Australian Professional League (APL) confirmed to Sporting News that there is no prize money up for grabs in the A-League grand final this season.

No prize money has been offered across the board in the competition since its inception meaning a club that finishes first in the regular season doesn't benefit either.

That lack of financial reward is an aspect the APL noted they will be reviewing moving forward following their recent unbundling from Football Australia

In 2018, Football Federation Australia as it was then known, shot down plans to introduce prize money, stressing it wasn't yet feasible.

"It is a worthy aspiration for the league and should be introduced when affordable,” then FFA CEO David Gallop told The Daily Telegraph

“In recent times we have focused on increases to the club grants that are now $3.5 million with a salary cap of $3 million. The grants are made to all clubs."

Prize money in the FFA Cup and Asian Champions League

The FFA Cup, meanwhile, has previously offered a small amount of prize money with the winner in 2019 walking away with $50,000, the runner-up $25,000, semi-finalists $10,000, quarter-finalists $5,000 and round-of-16 sides $2,000.

The Asian Champions League continues to offer the largest financial incentives to clubs with the 2020 champion reportedly pocketing $4 million.

Every win in the group stage of the tournament also earned a team $60,000 with a draw providing a $10,000 paycheck.

Prize money in the AFL and NRL

Australia's other sporting codes aren't quite as shy when it comes prize money - though both did have to scale back in 2020 due to COVID-19.

Last season, the AFL premiers were originally expected to pocket $1.2 million before that was slashed to an unspecified amount.

It was a similar situation in the NRL with the grand final winners rewarded $200,000 - half of what was offered the year before. The minor premiers were also handed a reduced sum of $50,000 for finishing first in the regular season.
