George Williams has spurned reported interest from the NRL to sign a new deal with Super League champions Wigan Warriors until 2021.

The England stand-off, who already had a contract until 2018, had been linked with Warrington Wolves – who the Warriors beat in last year's Grand Final – or a move to Australia.

However, Williams has committed his future to Wigan and becomes their second marquee player alongside Sam Tomkins, although he can leave at the end of 2020 should a set fee be met.

"I'm delighted to agree this new contract with my hometown club," he told Wigan's official website.

"There has been a lot of speculation and interest and to be honest it's been quite overwhelming at times, but all I ever wanted to do was play for Wigan and my heart is here at this club.

"I've been here since I was 12 years old and this club is like a family to me. I'm just looking forward to staying here now, reaching my potential and winning as many trophies as possible."

Williams' new deal is a boost to Super League after it was last week agreed to increase the salary cap in an attempt to deter talent moving to the NRL, while the number of marquee players was increased from one to two.

The 22-year-old was part of the Wigan side that won last season's Grand Final, while he also played in the in World Club Challenge victory over Cronulla Sharks.
