Less than 24 hours after Darius Boyd was ruled out for Game III, New South Wales prayers may have been answered with Johnathan Thurston now likely to join Boyd on the sidelines at Suncorp for the Origin decider.

Rushed back into the Maroons side after missing Game I through a shoulder injury, Thurston put in a laboured performance on Wednesday night with scans in the aftermath revealing his right shoulder could have sustained further damage.

With the Cowboys last night confirming Thurston won't be playing this weekend, Queensland coach Kevin Walters clearly isn't very optimistic about his chances of making the Origin decider.

"We will do everything we can but he is very doubtful for Game III," Walters said on Triple M.

"He is very knocked around.

"Not sure how he got through the game to be truthful."

Further scans on the shoulder are expected today with a verdict on the injury to come not long after.

If Thurston was to be ruled out, it would be mean he has likely played his final game of Origin with the Cowboys captain announcing at the start of the year that this would be his final season of representative rugby league.
