Daria Gavrilova and Nick Kyrgios ended Australia's 17-year wait for a second Hopman Cup triumph at the expense of Ukraine in Perth on Saturday.
Not since Jelena Dokic and Mark Philippoussis' victory in 1999 had an Australian duo got their hands on the Hopman Cup, but Australia Green pair Kyrgios and Gavrilova were not to be denied on home soil as they both won singles matches to ensure the mixed doubles match was not needed.
Gavrilova set the tone by consigning Elina Svitolina to her first defeat of the tournament in the opening contest at the Perth Arena.
The Russia-born 21-year-old won 6-4 7-6 (8-6) against world number 19 Svitolina to put the hosts just one victory away from Hopman Cup glory.
Gavrilova broke twice in a first set, which was delayed by rain, to edge in front, then produced a extraordinary fightback in a second-set tie-break to recover from 6-1 down to seal victory.
The stage was set for Kyrgios to finish the job and he also only needed two sets against Alexandr Dolgopolov to end Ukraine's challenge.
An inspired Kyrgios ended the competition with an unbeaten record after prevailing 6-3 6-4 in his first career match against Dolgopolov.
Kyrgios got the upper hand with a break to lead 4-2, then Dolgopolov failed to hold in his next service game after breaking back and was unable to hit back for a second time.
World number 30 Kyrgios needed just a solitary break in the second set to ensure Australia were able to celebrate a Hopman Cup success which has been a long time coming.
