Named after Australian great Rod Laver, the tournament will take a form similar to that of the Ryder Cup with six European-based players pitted against six from the rest of the world.
After 37 games played against one another, the event will see the Spaniard and Swiss stars compete on the same side for the first time and it's an opportunity Federer is clearly excited about.
"Finally, after all these years, I get a chance to actually support his forehand, his aggressive play, his everything, his fighting spirit," he said.
"I know Rafa so well, and he's been a wonderful champion for our sport.
"So for us to spend sort of a week together on the same team and exchanging ideas of how we could win the Laver Cup, I think it's going to be really highly entertaining for both of us."
The dynamic duo join an imposing European team picked by Bjorn Borg that also includes Marin Cilic, Dominic Thiem, Tomas Berdych and Alexander Zverev.
Australian Nick Kyrgios was unlucky not get picked for John McEnroe's Rest of the World team which instead features Juan Martin del Potro, Denis Shapovalov, Milos Raonic, John Isner, Jack Sock and Sam Querrey.
Before Federer and Nadal combine at the Laver Cup scheduled for September 22-24, they will each be looking to add another grand slam to their impressive collections with the US Open set to begin August 31.
