Rafael Nadal's quest for a 10th French Open title started in straightforward fashion with victory over teenage wildcard Quentin Halys.
'The King of Clay' was true to his moniker with a 6-3 6-3 6-4 success against Halys, who made the first appearance at a grand slam of his young career on the famous Philippe Chatrier Court.
The defending champion hit 25 winners while Halys committed 52 unforced errors as Nadal cruised through to set up a second-round clash with Spanish compatriot Nicolas Almagro, who beat Alexandr Dolgopolov in four sets.
World number one Novak Djokovic is also into the second round following a 6-2 7-5 6-2 triumph versus Jarkko Nieminen.
Djokovic survived a scare by coming back from 5-2 down to win the second set and ease into a 4-0 lead in third before advancing.
Seventh seed David Ferrer had no difficulties in seeing off Lukas Lacko 6-1 6-3 6-1, the Spaniard's 300th career win on clay ensuring a meeting with countryman Daniel Gimeno-Traver following his defeat of Joao Souza.
The biggest casualty of the day was 10th seed Grigor Dimitrov as he succumbed to a 7-6 (9-7) 6-2 6-3 loss against Jack Sock.
Sock - who matched his career-best showing at a grand slam by reaching last year's third round in Paris - will play Pablo Carreno-Busta, a straight-sets winner over Victor Estrella Burgos, next.
Ninth seed and US Open champion Marin Cilic comfortably dispatched Robin Haase 6-2 6-4 6-2, while 16th seed John Isner knocked down 21 aces as he overcame Andreas Seppi 7-5 6-2 6-3.
Kevin Anderson was a 6-4 6-4 6-2 victor against Tim Smyczek and 20th seed Richard Gasquet breezed past Germain Gigounon 6-3 6-4 6-0.
Jerzy Janowicz was forced to come from behind to progress 6-7 (4-7) 6-3 6-4 6-4 versus Maxime Hamou and Joao Sousa ensured an encounter with world number three Andy Murray courtesy of a straight-sets win over Vasek Pospisil.
Elsewhere, there were wins for Jeremy Chardy, Leonardo Mayer, Andrea Arnaboldi, Carlos Berlocq, and Lu Yen-Hsun, while the match between Gilles Muller and Paolo Lorenzi will be finished on Wednesday.
Muller tied things up at 4-6 4-6 7-6 (7-1) 7-6 (7-5) before darkness stopped play.
