The 109th edition of the Tour de France got underway on July 1 as the riders set off from the Danish capital city of Copenhagen before tackling 21 gruelling stages up until July 24.

The Grand Depart location proved to be fitting as Danish rider Jonas Vingegaard held off two-time reigning champion Tadej Pogacar to head to Paris as champion in waiting.

It has been a superb tour for Vingegaard's Jumbo-Visma squad, with teammate Wout van Aert romping to the points jersey.

With a hefty prize pot for this year's race, we explore how much money the winner will take home and break down the other key financial numbers.

Tour de France prize money 2022: What is the total fund?

The total prize fund for the 2022 Tour de France sits at just over £2.2 million ($2.7 million) this year - a total amount almost identical to last year's race in 2021.

How much does the Tour de France winner get?

Vingegaard will earn £430,000 ($528,000) - a very similar amount to what Pogačar himself took home after coming out victorious in last year's race.

What is the prize money breakdown for the 2022 Tour de France?

The allocation of prize money for the 2022 Tour de France is a little more complicated than most sporting events, with money being paid out in a variety of different ways.

As mentioned before, the winner takes home £430,000 with Pogacar in second 2018 winner Geraint Thomas in third place winning £170,000 ($211,000) and £86,000 ($105,000) respectively for their places on the podium.

The top seven riders will take home at least £8,600 each, whilst each rider who finishes the final stage in Paris will take home at least £860 ($1,100).

There's then prize money given to teams, jersey classification victors and stage winners.

Each stage winner will take home £9,500 ($11,600) per victory - Jumbo-Visma had six winners overall on the way to Paris - with second and third on each day earning £4,700 ($5,800) and £2,400 ($2,950).

A sizable chunk of money goes to the teams who finish first, second and third at the Tour de France, winning £43,000 ($52,800), £25,000 ($31,500) and £17,000 ($21,000) respectively. Despite their individual accolades, Jumbo-Visma came in thrid in the team classification behind Groupama-FDJ and winners Ineos Grenadiers.
