Rising star Bernal suffers 'serious facial trauma' in San Sebastian crash image

Team Sky have confirmed rising star Egan Bernal suffered serious facial injuries in a crash during the closing stages of the Clasica San Sebastian.

Bernal impressed with a series of outstanding performances at last month's Tour de France, enhancing his reputation as one of cycling's brightest young prospects.

However, the 21-year-old Colombian was one of several riders involved in a heavy crash towards the end of Saturday's race, which was won by Julian Alaphilippe (Quick-Step Floors).

Bernal and Movistar's Mikel Landa were each given a neck brace, although the latter played down concerns over the severity of his injuries.

A Team Sky statement on Bernal read: "Egan suffered a serious facial trauma. He is awake and talking. He has had a precautionary scan to assess for further injuries which revealed a nasal fracture and maxillary injury.

"He will be assessed by maxillofacial specialists and will be staying overnight for observation and further treatment."
