Mark Wood spoke of his relief at breaking his Test duck after a topsy-turvy start to his England Test career against New Zealand.

The Durham seamer thought he had taken his first wicket at Lord's on Friday when Martin Guptill was caught at first slip, only for Wood to have overstepped the line for a no-ball.

However, Wood impressed on Saturday with figures of 3-93, Brendon McCullum becoming his first victim when he skewed a shot to Joe Root at third man.

"It was great to pick up that first wicket eventually," Wood told Sky Sports. "It was the best and worst feeling I've ever had taking that wicket with the no-ball, but it was just nice to get one in the end.

"In training I make a point to not bowl them [no-balls] but in games I creep up, I don't know if it's the adrenaline."

England enjoyed a better day with the ball on day three, but New Zealand still posted an imposing total of 523 all out.

The hosts then reached stumps at 74-2 in their second innings, still 60 runs in arrears with Alastair Cook (32 not out) and Ian Bell (29 not out) at the crease.

"We're 60 runs behind, it's a bit of a cliche but it's an important first hour [on Sunday]," Wood added.

"There's a lot of hard work in this game. We've got to play two days' good cricket again to get into this game. If we get a lead of 200 then I would fancy us.

"I thought the way the lads [Cook and Bell] battled was outstanding. The other two lads [Adam Lyth and Gary Ballance] got two pretty decent balls [for their dismissals]."
