Women's Big Bash League (WBBL) matches in Tasmania this weekend will be played behind closed doors due to a COVID-19 case.

A COVID-positive man escaped hotel quarantine in Hobart and was infectious in the community for 18 hours.

As a result, Tasmanian Premier Peter Gutwein announced a lockdown would run in the Hobart region from Friday 6pm until Monday 6pm.

Four WBBL games were scheduled across the weekend in Tasmania's capital and they will continue under strict COVID-19 biosecurity protocols with no crowds at Blundstone Arena.

"The League and all eight clubs are incredibly thankful to the Tasmanian Government for allowing the Weber WBBL to safely continue in Hobart this weekend," Alistair Dobson, Big Bash Leagues chief, stated in a media release.

"We’d also like to express our gratitude to players and staff from all clubs, plus match officials, broadcast partners and venue staff for their understanding as we worked through the final details with the Tasmanian Government. The experience gained from last summer means all involved in the Weber WBBL are well prepared to do whatever necessary to conduct a safe and successful competition this year.

"While we are disappointed not to be welcoming fans to Blundstone Arena this weekend, we hope they will enjoy all the action from all four games on Seven, Foxtel, Kayo and ABC Radio."

Sixers WBBL

There have been no major COVID-19 outbreaks in Tasmania since April this year and state Government officials are not taking any risks for a potential breakout.

Cricket Australia have ensured that everyone involved with the WBBL in Tasmania have met the state's COVID-19 guidelines.

"All players, staff and match officials in Tasmania for the Weber WBBL have received COVID-19 vaccinations and received the required negative COVID-19 test results," the statement from CA said.

"All are currently participating in training at Blundstone Arena or at team hotels."

There has been only one WBBL match so far with the Sydney Sixers’ enjoying a six-wicket win over the Melbourne Stars.

The first nine matches have been scheduled to take place in Hobart before the tournament moves to Launceston with later matches also being played in Perth, Adelaide and Mackay.
