WBBL final attracts record crowd as star overcomes 'terrible week' image

Perth Scorchers have claimed their first Women's Big Bash League League title after beating Adelaide Strikers by 12 runs in the final on Saturday night.

In front of a record crowd of 15,511, the Scorchers ensured it was third time lucky after losing their previous two finals in the competition.

Opening the batting at Optus Stadium, Perth posted 146-5 from their 20 overs with Sophie Devine top scoring with 35 runs, while player of the match Marizanne Kapp hit a quickfire 31 off 23 balls.

Kapp had been unwell all week leading into the final but stepped up with bat and ball with as she helped restrict the Strikers to 134-6.

The Scorchers were particularly effective during the powerplay with Kapp's first two overs during it costing just two runs as Adelaide failed to match the required run rate.

Kapp also bowled a maiden as she made the most of her familiarity with opposing batter and wife Dane van Niekerk.

"It was a terrible week for me. I was unwell, couldn't get out of bed," Kapp said post-match.

"It was odd facing off my wife in the final. She knows me so well."

After the Matildas attracted a record crowd of over 36,000 at Stadium Australia earlier in the day, the WBBL final also proved its appeal as the competition lured in a record number of fans for a standalone match.

While disappointed by the defeat, Adelaide captain Tahlia McGrath savoured the chance to play in front of so many spectators and paid credit to the Scorchers.

"We'll be back bigger and better next year. They've had a great year, beaten us three times now," McGrath said.

"They thoroughly deserve the championship. Thanks to Cricket Australia and everyone behind the scenes - it's been pretty cool playing in front of 15,000 fans."
