Wide or not? Umpire Richard Kettlebrough "plays" a role in helping Virat Kohli get to a hundred against Bangladesh image

Batting first, Bangladesh openers Tanzid Hasan and Litton Das got off to a strong start, putting on a stand of 93 for the first wicket. However, some excellent bowling in the middle overs from Ravindra Jadeja and Kuldeep Yadav helped India restrict them to 256.

In reply, India won the match almost at a canter, never once looking in trouble. Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill laid the platform before Virat Kohli anchored the run chase, scoring his 48th ODI hundred with the winning six.

Wide or not? Did Richard Kettlebrough rule in favour of Virat Kohli?

Towards the end of the run chase, with India requiring under 20 runs to win and Kohli needing around the same number to reach three figures, he and batting partner KL Rahul began to help the former retain strike to score all the remaining runs.

At the end of the 41st over, Kohli was on 97, with India needing 2 runs to win. Nasum Ahmed came in to bowl, and fired one in to Kohli outside leg stump. The batter took a step to the off-side, leaving the ball which appeared to be a wide.

However, umpire Richard Kettlebrough did not rule it a wide, a decision which allowed Kohli a little more leeway in terms of attempting to get a century.

Fans of Kohli and others alike jokingly suggested that the umpire also wanted to see Kohli score a hundred, and hence did not call wide.

Comparisons were also drawn with the following situation, when India's R Ashwin had stepped across to a similar ball against Pakistan in the 2022 T20 World Cup, and the decision was a wide.
