Australian fast bowler Mitch Starc starred on day one of the tour match against English country side Derbyshire, with figures of 3-46 in the first innings of the three day tour match.

A few Australians are pushing their case to be a part of the fourth Test, including Starc, with openers Marcus Harris and Usman Khawaja also pressing their cases for a spot.

Skipper Tim Paine was rested from the tour game, which has given him a chance to have an objective look at the team's performances.

Following day one, Paine remained tight-lipped on Starc's chance of a recall before the fourth Test, but praised his bowling performance.

“His opening spell was really good. He’s been working on his length and I think he showed some really good control in his first spell,” Paine said.

“He bowled a long spell too (seven overs), which he doesn’t do a lot when he plays for Australia.

“The areas he has been trying to improve, so he can be important for us in English conditions, I thought he showed today he’s going really well with that.”

Paine also praised Starc's ability to get wickets in quick succession.

“We saw again at the end, when he can go back to what his strengths are - attack the stumps and use his short balls - he’s a handful for the tail,” he added.

Former England cricketer, Bob Willis, says he's shocked Starc hasn't featured already in the Ashes.

“I’m amazed that they haven’t played Starc in this series so far, not only for his bowling but for the rough he would create for Nathan Lyon,” Willis said on Sky Sports.

“Because Lyon has been pretty sterile in the last couple of matches.

“Stokes has played him particularly well. We thought he was going to be a huge threat but if Starc comes back and creates those footmarks, he still could be."

Australia will be keen to keep their foot on the pedal against Derbyshire, especially with a returning Steve Smith still yet to bat.
