Former Australia captain Ricky Ponting would be shocked if Shane Watson was not recalled after being dropped for the Cricket World Cup clash against Afghanistan.
The out-of-form Watson was left out as Australia cruised to a 275-run victory in Perth on Wednesday.
Ponting was surprised by the decision to drop Watson, and he expects the 33-year-old to be back in the side sooner rather than later - perhaps even for Sunday's clash against Sri Lanka.
"Without Watto the team just seems to have too many of the same sort of players," Ponting wrote in his column in The Australian on Saturday.
"I can’t see, when you are taking on Sri Lanka tomorrow or the better teams in the finals, how you can have the same set-up Australia had against Afghanistan.
"Australia played that game with Glenn Maxwell, James Faulkner and Mitch Marsh padding out the middle.
"I think it was Shane Warne who said that with Brad Haddin there you have four blokes at number seven. He is right."
Ponting praised Watson for taking responsibility for his lack of runs, but believes the all-rounder was beginning to show good signs during his knock of 23 in Australia's loss to New Zealand.
The Australia great has no problem with Steve Smith batting at three, but is concerned with Maxwell at five.
"Steve Smith is a brilliant batsman and there is no problem with him batting at number three but with the team they had against Afghanistan you are asking for problems," Ponting wrote.
"If you lose early wickets you have Maxwell coming in at number five and I am not comfortable with that. I think it would make the selectors nervous too."
