Australia and India are set to lock horns in the much-awaited Border-Gavaskar starting in November with the Kangaroos hostin the five-match series.

The last time the two sides met was in Australia and it was back in 2020-21 when the Men in Blue managed to clinch the four-match series in one of the most historic comebacks in Test cricket history.

After Australia’s brutal win in the first match of the series, India staged a stunning comeback by winning the Boxing Day Test in Melbourne. They then drew the third Test in Sydney before winning the final Test of the series on the final day at the Gabba.

The last time Australia won the Border-Gavaskar trophy was in 2014-15 when India went down against the Aussies. It was the final Test series of MS Dhoni's career as he retired from the longest format after the series loss.

With the stage set for another historic series between the two cricketing giants, Aussie pacer Josh Hazlewood has motivated his team to do their best against the Indians and has also praised their rivals for their brilliant depth in all three formats.

In today’s story with The Sporting News, we take a look at the list of players from the current Australian squad who were part of the last Australian team that defeated India to win the the Border-Gavaskar trophy.

List of players from Australia to have won the Border-Gavaskar trophy

Nathan Lyon

Nathan Lyon has had a terrific record against the Indians in Tests. Lyon has been a thorn in the flesh for the Men in Blue in numerous Test matches, winning the game single-handedly at times. However, India’s explosive wicket-keeper has proved to be a form of a cheat code against the legendary spinner, taking the 36-year-old head-on.

Pant smashed Lyon all around the park in the final two Tests of the 2020/21 Gavaskar series including the one at the Gabba wherein he played an unbeaten knock of 88 runs as India chased down a target of 322 runs on the final day.

Steve Smith

Former Australian skipper, Steve Smith’s pedigree in test cricket doesn’t really come as a surprise. He has a much superior batting record as compared to any of the other batters against India. Smith has scored over 2000 runs in 36 innings against the Indians, averaging over 65.

Smith’s contribution will be crucial in the upcoming Border-Gavaskar trophy if Australia are to win the five-match series.

Mitchell Starc

Another veteran member of the Australian squad, Mitchell Starc has been a decisive player for Australia in Tests over the years, especially against India. Starc was in the squad for the 2014/15 Border Gavaskar trophy, the last time Australia won a Test series against India.

Mitchell Marsh

Mitchell Marsh is another Australian who has been on the winning side against the Indians in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. The Aussie all-rounder was in the squad for the 2014/15 series against India they won by a margin of 2-0.

Whether he will be in the squad for the upcoming Border-Gavaskar series is still up for debate, however, if he does manage to make it to the squad, he will be an important player for the team throughout the tournament.
