Kevin Pietersen achieved his highest first-class score in Surrey's County Championship Division Two match against Leicestershire as he continues to push for an England Test recall.

The South Africa-born batsman, who has not represented England since being unceremoniously sacked in February 2014 following the humiliating 5-0 defeat to Australia in the 2013-14 Ashes, reached 326 not out at The Oval.

Pietersen later tweeted: "Good time to hit some form? #326*."

Following his parting of ways with England, Pietersen released an autobiography in which he criticised the hierarchy and claimed a culture of bullying existed within the team.

But he has made no secret of his desire to return to the fold and opted to rejoin Surrey in a bid to boost his chances.

Pietersen went past 300 with a six - the 11th of 14 in his innings - while he also hit 34 fours and his knock will give former England team-mate Andrew Strauss food for thought.

Strauss was confirmed as the new director of England cricket last week and is due to to meet the media to discuss the role on Tuesday.

The former England captain was forced to issue an apology to Pietersen for making a derogatory comment about him while commentating on an MCC versus Rest of the World XI match last July, in which Pietersen was playing.

But Pietersen's knock is sure to lead to increased demand for a recall to the international scene, with England set to start a two-match Test series against New Zealand later this month in preparation for the latest Ashes series on home soil later this year.
