The home side secured victory in the first Test within four days and are looking to wrap up the series with another win at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.
The Men in Green have struggled historically in Test matches on Australian soil, never having won a Test series in the country. However, a significant moment in their cricketing history occurred during the 1995-96 series led by captain Wasim Akram.
Already trailing 2-0, Pakistan entered the third Test at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) with determination.
They posted a respectable total of 299 in their first innings, fueled by an outstanding knock of 137 by Ijaz Ahmed. The real turning point came when Wasim Akram and leg-spinner Mushtaq Ahmed showcased exceptional performances, collectively picking up nine wickets to limit the hosts to 257.
Despite a modest lead of 42, Pakistan faced challenges in their second innings, managing only 204 runs. Inzamam-ul-Haq's crucial innings of 59 played a pivotal role in setting Australia a target of 247 for victory.
Wasim & Mushtaq were once again the key bowlers for Pakistan as they bagged three wickets each to lead the visitors to a historic win by 74 runs. Mushtaq Ahmed was rightfully awarded the Player of the Match for his outstanding contribution of nine wickets in the game.
There were three other occasions when Pakistan came close to securing a win but the baggy greens did enough to turn the tide to emerge triumphant from the jaws of defeat.
In 1999, Adam Gilchrist and Matthew Hayden scored spectacular centuries to chase down a daunting total of 369 in the fourth innings, whereas, in 2009-10, Pakistan were skittled for just 139 while chasing 176. Nathan Hauritz picked a fifer whereas, Mitchell Johnson ended with three wickets to stifle Pakistan for less than 150.
In 2016, Pakistan fell short by just 39 runs while chasing 489. Asad Shafiq stood out with a brilliant 137 but his heroics were not enough to lead Pakistan to a test win.
What is Pakistan's record in test matches in Australia?
