The competition presents an opportunity for Australia to bounce back from a difficult campaign last time around. On home turf, they failed to qualify for the semifinals in 2022 despite entering as defending champions.

The last 12-18 months have been a period of exceptional success for Australia under captain Pat Cummins. They lifted the ICC World Test Championship and World Cup in 2023, and winning the T20 World Cup would make them the first team ever to hold all three trophies at once.

But Cummins may not be the man in charge for the T20 World Cup. Australia have played 14 T20Is since the previous T20 World Cup, and he has played in just two of them. Matthew Wade captained Australia on six occasions, while Mitchell Marsh did so eight times, including in the recently-concluded home series against West Indies.

Australian coach Andrew McDonald, who is part of Cricket Australia's selection panel for the T20 World Cup, hinted that the all-rounder would continue during the tournament in the Caribbean. As reported by cricket.com.au, he said,

We're happy and comfortable with the way he's been able to operate with that T20 team. We think he's the leader for the World Cup, and I think that will just be a matter of due course.

Marsh has led Australia five times in ODIs, apart from the eight T20Is. His record stands at a respectable nine matches won, with three of the four losses coming in ODIs against South Africa last September.
