After a long and cold winter, summer's approaching.

Cricket's back.

The Australian summer of cricket will begin with the rapid, fast-paced JLT One-Day Cup series, which will see the country's domestic stars show off their talents.

While many of these youngsters will press their claims to push for international selection in a couple of months' time, there will be a couple of Aussie exiles desperate to recapture their good form.

In particular, Glenn Maxwell is one man who will be hungry for runs following his axing from the Test team for the tour of the UAE.

Meanwhile, all we can do is wait and see what heights power-hitter Chris Lynn can reach.

THE FORMAT: WHERE AND WHEN WILL IT BE PLAYED?

The JLT One-Day Cup will be played in four states across the country.

The 25-day competition begins on September 16, with Queensland hosting Victoria.

It will conclude with the final on October 10.

Teams will play each other once to add up to five games before entering into a unique finals series.

The finals will consist of two qualifying finals (3rd vs 6th, 4th vs 5th), with the two winners to face the top two teams in the semi finals, before the decider.

WHICH VENUES WILL BE USED?

WACA Ground, Perth - WA

Junction Oval, Melbourne - VICTORIA

North Sydney Oval, Sydney - NSW

Hurstville Oval, Sydney - NSW

Western Australia: Ashton Turner (c), Ashton Agar, Hilton Cartwright, Nathan Coulter-Nile, Cameron Green, Josh Inglis, Matt Kelly, Joel Paris, Josh Philippe, Jhye Richardson, D’Arcy Short, Marcus Stoinis, Andrew Tye, Jonathan Wells.

WHO TO WATCH OUT FOR?

New South Wales: Daniel Sams - The 26-year-old left-armer burst onto the scene in last season's BBL, when he claimed 4/14 on debut for the Sixers. Expect Sams to be a wicket-taker for the Blues who are without their international pace trio.

Queensland: Chris Lynn - Oh boy, this could be entertaining. Lynn is one of the best limited overs players around the world, and while we're at it, one of the most powerful. Expect fireworks!

South Australia: Jake Lehmann - The son of Boof gets the opportunity to captain the Redbacks, and the aggressive young batsman will be looking to lead from the front with the willow.

Tasmania: Ben McDermott - The son of another Aussie great, Craig McDermott. The talented youngster first made his name with a huge 114 off 52 balls for the Hurricances in BBL07. There could be some special innings from this young man.

Victoria: Glenn Maxwell - Maxi defiinitely wasn't happy with his Test omission. You can bet your bottom dollar he will be looking to make a statement in this tournament.

Western Australia: Nathan Coulter-Nile - What a sight it is when Coulter-Nile runs in full of pace and takes out the pegs. After spending a long period on the sidelines due to a back injury, the tall quick will definitely be steaming in for his state.

WHAT HAPPENED TO THE CRICKET AUSTRALIA XI?

The One-Day Cup competition has been reduced to six teams this season - meaning there is no room for the Cricket Australia XI. The CA XI featured in the domestic competition for three seasons with the goal of giving some of the country's youngest talents an opportunity to show off their skills. While they suffered a number of heavy defeats, they did put up several fights and pulled off the odd victory.

WHO WON LAST YEAR?

Western Australia defeated South Australia in Hobart by eight wickets to take out the competition. Chasing 249, captain Mitchell Marsh led the chase with an unbeaten 80 to take victory with 38 balls remaining.
