MS Dhoni was in action in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 as Chennai Super Kings (CSK) hosted Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) at MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Friday.
CSK won the toss and Dhoni chose to field first. He thought there might be dew later on so it will be prudent to bat in the second innings.
He stood vindicated as his bowlers allowed SRH to post just 134 in their 20 overs. Ravindra Jadeja emerged as the most successful as he picked up three wickets for just 22 runs in his four overs.
Dhoni was as usual brilliant behind the stumps with two dismissals. In the 13th over, Aiden Markram was caught behind to Maheesh Theekshana. It was a carrom ball that spun away and Markram looking for a slog got an edge, which landed safely in the hands of the keeper.
In the next over, Dhoni pulled off a brilliant stumping to dismiss Mayank Agarwal. He broke the stumps in a flash after the batsman had pre-empted to walk down the pitch. Jadeja judged the intentions correctly and shortened the length outside off. Agarwal failed to get to the delivery and Dhoni made him pay.
However, the CSK skipper did not have to come out to bat as Ruturaj Gaikwad and Devon Conway put up an opening stand of 87 runs. Although the former fell for 35, Conway stood till the end and guided his team to a comfortable seven-wicket victory with eight balls to spare.
In this edition of IPL, Dhoni has scored 59 runs in three innings at a strike rate of 210.71.
